NEW: Zidane to France: Zinedine Zidane Named Head Coach of Les Bleus in Dream Homecoming

The wait is finally over. Zinedine Zidane has been officially unveiled as the new head coach of the France national team, closing the loop on a story French football fans have been dreaming about for years. The French Football Federation confirmed the appointment on Tuesday in Paris, handing the World Cup-winning icon a four-year contract that runs through the 2030 World Cup cycle.

For Zidane, this is not just another job. It is the job.

A Five-Year Wait Comes to an End

Zidane succeeds Didier Deschamps, who steps down after 14 years in charge, 185 matches, and a trophy cabinet that includes the 2018 World Cup title, the 2020-21 Nations League crown, and back-to-back Euro and World Cup final appearances. Deschamps’ exit was long expected, and Zidane has been the federation’s clear preference since well before this summer’s World Cup even kicked off.

Speaking at his unveiling, Zidane did not hide his emotions. He admitted he had waited five years for this exact opportunity, turning down offer after offer from clubs across Europe because international football with Les Bleus was the only role he ever wanted. That patience says everything about how much this appointment means to him.

“The France team makes you dream,” Zidane said, visibly moved as he addressed the room. “We have extraordinary players, an extraordinary team.”

From Bernabeu Glory to the France Dugout

Zidane does not arrive short on coaching pedigree. His résumé at Real Madrid is one of the finest in modern football history: three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles between 2016 and 2018, a feat no manager had ever achieved before him, plus a second Real Madrid spell from 2019 to 2021. What he lacks is experience at international level, where the rhythm, preparation windows, and squad management look nothing like club football. It is the one gap in an otherwise glittering coaching record, and it will be the first real test of this new era.

Zidane’s first assignment will be an away Nations League clash with Turkey on September 25, followed by a trip to Belgium three days later. French supporters will have to wait until October 2 to see him prowl the touchline at the Stade de France, fittingly against Italy, two decades after his career ended against the same opponents in the 2006 World Cup final.

Mbappe and the Dressing Room React

Reaction from the France camp was instant and warm. Captain Kylian Mbappe, who plays under Zidane’s shadow at Real Madrid, welcomed his new coach with a simple two-word message on social media: “Welcome Home.” It is a fitting phrase, given that Zidane himself has described this appointment as a continuation of a journey that began in France’s youth ranks decades ago.

Zidane has confirmed he has not yet spoken directly with Mbappe, choosing instead to let his captain enjoy the offseason before the squad reconvenes in September. He has also revealed plans to bring much of his trusted Real Madrid backroom staff with him, promising an attacking philosophy shaped by his 25 years in Spanish football.

The Zidane era at Les Bleus starts now, and the football world will be watching every step of it.
