On Sunday, May 10, 2026, Como 1906 wrote their name into the history books. With a hard-fought 1-0 victory away at Hellas Verona, the Lakeside club mathematically secured a top-six finish in Serie A — guaranteeing European football for the first time in their 119-year history!

This is no ordinary success story. This is one of the most remarkable rises in modern football.

The Decisive Moment

At the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi, it was a tense, typical away-day battle until Greek striker Anastasios Douvikas stepped up in the 71st minute. His clinical finish — his 13th goal of a superb campaign — proved to be the winner. No more drama needed. As the final whistle blew, the Como players, staff, and travelling fans erupted in pure joy.

This result locks in at least a UEFA Conference League spot for next season, with realistic hopes still alive for even higher (Europa League or even Champions League) depending on the final two matches.

The Man Behind the Magic: Cesc Fàbregas

At the heart of this miracle is manager Cesc Fàbregas. The former Arsenal, Barcelona, and Chelsea legend has transformed Como in record time.

Just two years ago (May 2024), Como celebrated promotion to Serie A after 21 years away from the top flight. Under Fàbregas, they finished comfortably in the top half in their debut season back. Now, in only their second season in Serie A, they’ve smashed through the glass ceiling.

Fàbregas has built a side that plays attractive, possession-based football while being incredibly hard to beat. The blend of smart recruitment, tactical discipline, and belief has turned a sleepy lakeside club into one of Serie A’s most exciting teams.

After the game, a visibly emotional Fàbregas said:

“Two years ago today we were promoted to Serie A and today we’re qualifying for Europe. The team, the club, the fans have all grown. It’s inexplicable.”

From Serie D to Europe – The Ultimate Fairytale

Let’s put this into perspective:

  • Seven years ago, Como were languishing in the fourth tier of Italian football.
  • Heavy investment from new ownership combined with smart football decisions.
  • Promotion in 2024.
  • Survival and growth in 2024/25.
  • European football in 2025/26.

It doesn’t get much better than this. Fans back in Como celebrated with fireworks, flags, and non-stop singing. The hashtag #SemmCumasch (We are Como) was trending for all the right reasons.

This qualification is more than just a spot in Europe — it’s validation of a project, a manager, and a city that dared to dream big.

Huge congratulations to everyone at Como 1906 — the players, Cesc Fàbregas and his staff, the owners, and the passionate supporters. You’ve earned every bit of this moment.

Now the big question: Can they go even higher and push for the Champions League places in the final games? Whatever happens, this season will be remembered forever.

What do you think of Como’s rise? Is Fàbregas one of the best young managers in Europe right now? Drop your thoughts in the comments — let’s celebrate this incredible achievement together!
