Big Rom Is Back — Belgium Beat Croatia 2-0 in World Cup Warm-Up Thriller

Date: November 30th 2025
Venue: Stadio Olimpico, Rome
Attendance: 63,937
Result: AS Roma 0-1 SSC Napoli

Match Summary

A solitary first-half goal from David Neres was enough to hand Napoli all 3 points at the Stadio Olimpico, pulling them level with AC Milan at the Serie A summit.
Roma’s impressive run of 4 consecutive victories came to an abrupt end, and with it went their position at the top of the table. This was a bitter pill to swallow for the Giallorossi, whose title hopes took a serious knock.

First Half: Napoli’s Decisive Moment

From the moment the referee’s whistle pierced through the foggy Roman evening, Napoli looked hungrier. They weren’t messing about in what everyone knew was a massive 6-pointer. Mile Svilar found himself busy early on, rushing off his line inside the opening 10 minutes to snuff out what could’ve been a golden opportunity for Noa Lang.

The pressure didn’t let up. 18 minutes in, Giovanni Di Lorenzo got himself on the end of a Neres cross at the back post, though he couldn’t quite squeeze it past Svilar from an awkward angle. You could sense it was coming. Svilar had to tip another dangerous ball over the bar as Napoli camped in Roma’s half.

Roma finally showed signs of life around the half-hour mark. Evan Ferguson rose well but couldn’t keep his header down. Just when it looked like the home side might be getting a foothold, Napoli struck.
The 36th minute saw Neres involved in everything—starting the move and finishing it too. Rasmus Hojlund slid a beautiful through ball into his path, and the Brazilian didn’t need a second invitation, slotting it home with real composure.

It was masterclass counter-attacking stuff, the kind of goal that wins tight matches. Roma tried to hit back before halftime, with Matias Soule testing his luck from range, but his effort flew well over.

Second Half: Drama

After the break, things carried on much the same way. Svilar was called into action again within 5 minutes, punching clear under heavy pressure from Scott McTominay. The big Scotsman was causing all sorts of headaches in the middle of the park, helping Napoli dictate the game’s rhythm.

Hojlund had a go from a tight spot on the hour, Svilar getting down well to deny him. Matteo Politano tried his luck from a distance too, as the visitors looked more likely to grab a second than Roma did an equalizer. Hojlund’s movement was giving the Roma backline nightmares all evening, constantly pulling defenders out of position.

As time wore on, you could feel the frustration building among the Roma fans packed into the Olimpico. Gian Piero Gasperini threw on some attacking players, desperate for a leveler, but Roma just couldn’t carve out anything clear. Lorenzo Pellegrini’s long-range pop looked like being their best effort until the dying moments brought real drama.

Deep into stoppage time, Paulo Dybala threaded a pass through to Baldanzi, whose shot looked destined for the net until Milinković-Savić produced an outstanding save. The keeper flung himself across the goal, somehow getting a hand to it. That moment sealed the points for Napoli, leaving Roma to rue what might have been.

Tactical Analysis

Napoli’s approach was spot on. They bossed the opening exchanges, pressed Roma high up the pitch, and then showed real maturity in seeing out the game after taking the lead.
Defensively, they were absolutely rock solid, forcing Roma into long-range efforts from a distance and keeping them at arm’s length for large stretches.

Roma, rather surprisingly, never really got going. Coming into this as league leaders with 4 consecutive victories, you’d have expected them to show more momentum. Instead, they seemed rattled by Napoli’s intensity and those foggy conditions didn’t help matters either. Their defense, which had been incredibly stingy all season—just 6 goals conceded in 12 games—got caught out by a perfectly executed counter.

Implications

This was absolutely huge for Napoli’s championship ambitions. Drawing level with AC Milan at the top sends a clear message: they’re not here to make up the numbers. They’ve got serious credentials as Scudetto challengers.

For Roma, this stings. Losing the top spot is one thing, but the way they lost it will hurt more. Gasperini’s got a job on his hands keeping spirits up after this setback. Their dream of bringing the title back to the capital for the first time in ages has hit a roadblock.

Napoli delivered when it mattered—organized, clinical, and professional from start to finish. Roma will be kicking themselves over their inability to create clear chances and their defensive vulnerability on the counterattack.

With the winter break approaching, the title race has taken a fascinating turn. Napoli have shown they’ve got the quality and the mentality to compete at the highest level.
