Brighton beat Man City 1-0 at the Etihad, and the Premier League title race suddenly has a new gatecrasher. It was Brighton’s first away win against City in 18 attempts. Now the big question: are Brighton genuine title contenders, or just very good party crashers?
How Brighton Beat Man City 1-0

The goal came early and came from a City blunder. Yasin Ayari scored in the 11th minute after Matheus Nunes miscued a clearance at the Etihad. The Sweden international has quickly become another Brighton gem.

Then the siege began. City threw everything at it. Brighton stood firm. Hurzeler said his players wanted to show that defence wins matches, and goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen said the number of bodies thrown in front of shots was incredible.
The Verbruggen Wall

Verbruggen was the hero. He made seven saves, the second-most in a Premier League game this season, preventing an estimated 1.74 goals. Haaland, Doku and company found him impossible to beat. It was a clean sheet worth framing.
The Numbers That Sting

Here is the part that makes Brighton fans giddy. Brighton’s starting XI was worth around £160m, while City’s was worth £750m. Brighton also had to digest a painful midweek: they lost on penalties at the Etihad in the League Cup just days earlier. Revenge was served cold.
Are Brighton Title Contenders? The Case For

The table says yes, for now. Brighton have 19 points from nine games, third in the table and two behind City and Arsenal. They have also beaten both Arsenal and City in the league this season. They are now unbeaten in five Premier League meetings with City. Beating the big two is exactly what title challengers do.
The Case Against

Reality has a few reminders. City’s poor finishing let Brighton off, and that will not happen every week. Brighton also missed chances to score more than once. The schedule is the bigger worry. Brighton’s Conference League ties crowd their next seven league games. Getafe is next in Europe, and title races punish thin squads. Hurzeler is playing it cool anyway. He says his sole concern is the next match, and Brighton have never won a major trophy.
Our Verdict

Brighton are a real top-four threat and a nightmare to play against. A title still feels like a stretch, but the fixture list will be the judge, not the scoreline. City are also not out of it; their defeat means Arsenal can go top if they avoid losing at Liverpool on Sunday. Maresca admitted his side keep conceding silly goals, so the race remains wide open
