Cameroon has sidelined goalkeeper Andre Onana from their squad for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) which is scheduled to start this month in Morocco. Onana, who is on loan from Manchester United to Trabzonspor, is only one of many experienced players who didn’t make the squad for the tournament which is scheduled to hold from December 21 to January 18.
Reports say the changes come as a result of Cameroon’s inability to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. This came as no shock as striker, Vincent Aboubakar who has been the mainstay of the team for the last 15 was also dropped from the squad.
Regardless, Manchester United winger, Bryan Mbeumo made the squad alongside midfielder, Carlos Baleba. Meanwhile, the restructuring of the team also saw Brys, being replaced by David Pagou as the new coach after the country’s football federation President, Samuel Eto’o who had long publicized his intents of replacing 63-year-old Brys since his April 2024 appointment.
Eyo who was re-elected as President last weekend, appointed Pagou as he seemed like a good fit for the job as he has ample experience from his days managing Cameroon’s domestic league and will be assured by Martin Ntoungou Mplie.
Cameroon will start their Group F run at the Cup of Nations finals against Gabon on December 24 at Agadir. They will also go against the defending champions Ivory and Mozambique as they progress.
