Big Rom Is Back — Belgium Beat Croatia 2-0 in World Cup Warm-Up Thriller

Date: November 26th, 2025
Venue: Stadio Georgios Karaiskaki, Athens
Attendance: 32,325
Result: Olympiakos 3-4 Real Madrid

Match Overview

Real Madrid finally broke their Greek curse with a breathless victory that had everything but a clean sheet. The scoreline tells you all you need to know—7 goals, end-to-end action, and Kylian Mbappe absolutely running riot with all 4 of Madrid’s strikes.
According to ESPN, Mbappe’s hat trick came faster than almost any other in Champions League history, taking him to 22 goals this season and 9 in European competitions alone.

The 3 points couldn’t have come at a better time for Los Blancos, who’d been struggling through a rough patch without a win in their last 3 games. They’ve now climbed to 5th place in the Champions League table on 12 points.

First Half: Early Shock & Mbappe’s Historic

Things got off to the worst possible start when Chiquinho caught Madrid napping in the 8th minute, sending the home crowd into raptures. But Mbappe wasn’t having any of it. What followed was extraordinary—3 goals in just 7 minutes. Only Mohamed Salah has done it quicker in the Champions League, managing his treble in 6 minutes back in 2022. By halftime, Madrid was cruising at 3-1.

Before all that drama, though, Vinicius Junior had given everyone a taste of what was coming. He burst through in the 3rd minute and forced a decent save from Konstantinos Tzolakis, who got a strong hand to tip it over the bar.

Second Half: End-to-End Drama

When Mbappe grabbed his 4th around the hour mark, you’d have been forgiven for thinking the game was done and dusted at 4-1. Except nobody told Olympiakos. The Greek side came roaring back with two quick goals to make it 4-3, and suddenly Madrid was hanging on for dear life. El Kaabi nearly grabbed an equalizer late on with a volley that whistled past the post. Those last 5 minutes of added time felt like an eternity for Madrid fans, but they somehow managed to see it through.

Match Statistics:

  • Possession: Olympiakos 41.1% – 58.9% Real Madrid
  • Shots: Olympiakos 18 – 15 Real Madrid
  • Shots on Target: Olympiakos 8 – 7 Real Madrid
  • Corners: Olympiakos 3 – 5 Real Madrid
  • Fouls: Olympiakos 12 – 7 Real Madrid

Tactical Analysis

Sports Illustrated points out what everyone watching could see—Madrid’s defense was all over the place. With only Asencio available as a natural center-back and Tchouameni filling in beside him, the makeshift backline looked shaky all night. Olympiacos exploited this weakness relentlessly, especially from set pieces where Taremi and El Kaabi both powered home headers.

You have to feel for Jose Luis Mendilibar, the Olympiacos boss. His team matched Madrid’s energy, created plenty of chances, and played some really good football. They just couldn’t deal with Mbappe when it mattered most.

Historic Context

Here’s a fun fact—this was Madrid’s first competitive win in Greece ever. After 7 failed attempts, they finally got it done. The victory comes against a backdrop of speculation about Xabi Alonso’s management style, with whispers that some big names in the squad aren’t entirely sold on his approach following the team’s recent slump.

Implications & Verdict

Coming into this match, Alonso’s Madrid sat 7th in the Champions League with 3 wins and a loss under their belt. This was their 4th away game on the bounce, and they were doing it without some massive names—Courtois, Rudiger, Carvajal, and Militao all watching from home.

As for Olympiakos, they’re still searching for their first win in this year’s competition. It’s harsh because they showed plenty of character and nearly pulled off something special here. They’ve been fantastic domestically, leading their league and unbeaten at home in Europe before tonight. But with just 2 points from 5 matches and sitting 33rd in the expanded league table, their Champions League dream is pretty much over.

This match perfectly captured what happens when attacking brilliance meets defensive chaos. Mbappe’s 4-goal masterclass belongs in the conversation about the greatest individual Champions League performances we’ve seen. His movement, his finishing, and his timing are all world-class.
Yet even in victory, questions remain about Madrid’s defensive setup under Alonso. Can they really challenge for silverware while looking this vulnerable at the back?

For anyone watching as a neutral, though? This was pure entertainment. The kind of game that reminds you why the Champions League remains football’s premier competition.
