Date: 22nd November 2025
Venue: St. James’ Park
Attendance: 52,181
Result: Newcastle 2-1 Man. City

Match Overview

Harvey Barnes netted a brace as the Magpies triumphed 2-1 over Manchester City. This victory marked Eddie Howe’s maiden win against Pep Guardiola across 17 Premier League encounters.

Harvey Barnes struck twice in the second period (63′, 70′), while Ruben Dias pulled one back for the visitors (68′).
The passionate Tyneside crowd of 52,181 witnessed a thrilling encounter at St. James’ Park.

First Half: A Chaotic Opening 45 Minutes

The opening half was bonkers. According to the analyst’s report, we saw something genuinely bizarre: 7 massive chances were created (Newcastle carved out 4, City managed 3) with a combined expected goals figure of 2.59, yet somehow the scoreboard remained blank at the interval.

This represented the highest big chance count in any goalless Premier League first half since records began in 2010-2011. Additionally, it ranked as the second-highest non-penalty xG recorded in a scoreless opening 45 minutes since tracking started in 2012-2013.

Notable First-Half Incidents/Key Missed Chances

  • The action kicked off immediately, and just 27 seconds in, Joelinton pounced on Donnarumma’s wayward pass intended for Foden, setting up Barnes, who, frustratingly, fired directly at the keeper.
  • Donnarumma produced an acrobatic one-handed stop to deny Nick Woltemade’s thunderous header around the 13-minute mark.
  • Barnes really should’ve done better near the half-hour when Jacob Murphy whipped a dangerous ball across the goal, but the winger somehow missed with an open net beckoning.
  • Nick Pope pulled off a remarkable reaction save to keep out Haaland’s sharp effort following Nico O’Reilly’s cutback.
  • Controversy arose when Fabian Schar challenged Phil Foden inside the box. City’s players screamed for a penalty, but VAR determined insufficient contact occurred.

Second-Half Goals Galore

63rd minute – Barnes Breaks Deadlock (1-0)

The deadlock finally gave way when Bruno Guimaraes drove forward powerfully before setting up Barnes, who unleashed a fantastic strike from roughly 25 yards that left Donnarumma helpless.

68th minute – Dias Equalizes (1-1)

The city responded almost immediately. Newcastle’s defending at a corner proved sloppy, allowing Dias space to volley. His effort took a deflection and squeezed past Pope.

70th minute – Barnes Restores Lead (2-1).

What a response from Newcastle! Guimaraes’ header crashed against the woodwork, and the rebound fell kindly for Barnes, who slammed it home from close quarters.

VAR scrutinized the goal extensively, checking for offside against both Barnes and Guimaraes on separate instances. After nearly 5 anxious minutes, the officials determined both players remained onside, and the goal counted.

VAR Controversy and Disputed Decisions

Sky Sports highlighted City’s frustration with several VAR calls. Guardiola particularly questioned whether Barnes had fouled Donnarumma while attacking the second goal, potentially impeding the goalkeeper’s positioning.

Donnarumma immediately protested to the match officials, convinced he’d been obstructed, but his appeals fell on deaf ears.

Statistical Numbers

Historical Significance

Sports Mole and The Analyst noted Barnes’ achievement: he became the first Newcastle player since Alan Shearer in November 2003 to bag a brace against Manchester City in Premier League action. Remarkably, this was the teams’ 40th league meeting since Shearer’s double.

Newcastle’s home form in 2025 has been impressive; they’ve won 10 of their last 13 league fixtures at St. James’ Park.

Implications

Sky Sports reported that City squandered an opportunity to narrow Arsenal’s advantage to just a single point. They remain 3rd, now 4 points adrift of the leaders.

Newcastle climbed to 14th position, establishing a 5-point cushion above the drop zone.

This result carries significant implications for both teams moving forward. Newcastle gained crucial confidence ahead of their Champions League fixture in Marseille, while City’s title aspirations suffered another setback in what’s becoming an increasingly difficult campaign.
