Historic Return After Two-Year Absence

Football Today and Sports Illustrated report that FC Barcelona has received approval from Barcelona’s city council to reopen the Spotify Camp Nou with a capacity of 45,401 spectators, marking the first competitive match at the stadium since May 28, 2023.
The momentous return match is scheduled for Saturday, November 22, 2025, when Barcelona hosts Athletic Club de Bilbao in La Liga matchday 13.

The initial capacity for the return is significantly limited compared to the final projected capacity and is based on the club securing the necessary occupancy licenses.

The Phase 1B License Approval

Football Today and Sports Illustrated report that the city council granted the Phase 1B occupancy license following significant improvements in evacuation routes, handrail systems, entrances, and internal circulation.
This represents a substantial increase from the initial Phase 1A license issued in October, which only permitted 25,991 spectators.

Barcelona declined to return under that initial license because the club deemed the capacity inadequate from a financial perspective.
Barcelona received the Phase 1A license with a 25,991 capacity in October but found it unsatisfactory financially, prompting them to pursue the expanded Phase 1B license that now allows 45,401 spectators.

Infrastructure Improvements and Safety Upgrades

According to reports by Football Today, the approval comes after Barcelona completed extensive safety and facility upgrades throughout the stadium.
The club has finished a new players’ tunnel, updated dressing rooms, and modernized fire-safety installations, while digital access gates and integrated ticketing systems have been adapted to operate alongside ongoing construction.

Barcelona held a successful test event on November 3, 2025, conducting an open training session that welcomed nearly 23,000 fans.
President Joan Laporta classified this event as a success, which helped pave the way for the expanded capacity approval.

The Long Road to Reopening

According to reports by OneFootball and Football Today, the return has been marked by multiple delays and revised timelines.
Initial plans suggested a partial reopening in late 2024, but construction delays, safety inspections, and access-route concerns pushed the schedule back, forcing Barcelona to abandon its intention to stage the Joan Gamper Trophy at Camp Nou in August.

During the closure, Barcelona has played home matches at two different venues. The club spent most of the past two seasons at the 55,000-capacity Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys (Olympic Stadium).
At the start of the current 2025/26 season, when the Olympic Stadium was unavailable, Barcelona played initial home fixtures at the 6,000-capacity Estadi Johan Cruyff before returning to the Olympic Stadium.

Future Capacity Expansion Plans

StadiumDB reports that while the 45,401-capacity reopening represents a significant milestone, it is far from the final configuration.
Barcelona is working on Phase 1C, which will eventually reopen the North Goal area, and if the plan stays on schedule, by the end of 2025, the stadium will hold 62,518 spectators, completing the first two tiers, including the North Goal and a new VIP area.

The long-term timeline calls for continued construction throughout the 2026/27 season, during which the third tier will be built. The roof installation is scheduled for completion between summer and Christmas 2027.
Once fully finished, the renovated Spotify Camp Nou will boast a capacity of 105,000 spectators, making it one of the largest football stadiums in the world.

Operational Challenges and Achievements

The partial reopening at 45,401 capacity represents approximately 43 percent of the stadium’s future full capacity. Barcelona will continue operating with construction ongoing in other sections of the venue, requiring careful coordination between matchday operations and building work.

This reopening represents not only a return to Barcelona’s historic home but also a crucial financial boost for the club. The move from the temporary venues back to Camp Nou, even at reduced capacity, provides significantly enhanced revenue opportunities through ticketing, hospitality, and matchday operations.

The successful reopening after such an extended absence and multiple setbacks demonstrates Barcelona’s commitment to completing the ambitious Espai Barca project while ensuring fan safety and comfort remain paramount priorities.
