Newsroom reports that Crystal Palace Football Club received formal planning permission from Croydon Council in August 2024 for the redevelopment of Selhurst Park’s Main Stand, which will increase the stadium’s total capacity from approximately 26,000 to more than 34,000.
The project, centered on building a new Main Stand, has been in the planning phase for several years but is now moving into the final stages before major construction begins.

This represents a transformational project for the South London club, centered on replacing the century-old Main Stand with a modern, state-of-the-art facility.

The New Main Stand Design

StadiumDB reports that the glass-fronted Main Stand will be a landmark building that will hold 13,500 fans, significantly expanding from the current capacity of 5,200.

The new facility will include enhanced amenities such as more general admission seats, new corporate facilities, improved disabled access, and a club museum.
Additionally, inside the stand, there will be a new club shop, museum, and café, providing significantly improved matchday experiences and year-round community facilities.

Construction Timeline and Methodology

NEW: CRYSTAL PALACE STADIUM REDEVELOPMENT UPDATE

Crystal Palace’s official media outlet reports that the club is hoping to commence building work on the new Main Stand at Selhurst Park following the conclusion of the 2024-25 Premier League season, with the intention of starting building works at the conclusion of the 2024/25 football season.

The construction is expected to take approximately 2.5 years to complete, meaning the redeveloped stand could be operational by late in the 2026/27 season.

Crystal Palace FC media further reports that one of the most impressive aspects of this project is the construction methodology.
The new stand will be built around the existing structure to keep the stadium fully operational throughout the build.

This approach ensures that Selhurst Park can continue hosting matches throughout most of the construction period, though the final stages may require the club to play away from home for a couple of months.

Current Project Status

NEW: CRYSTAL PALACE STADIUM REDEVELOPMENT UPDATE

Football Ground Guide reports that, as of the most recent updates from January 2025, the club confirmed that the redevelopment of Selhurst Park is progressing well, noting that with the preliminary processes done, the club is now in the final planning phase, which includes negotiation with the contractors.

Palace appointed Australian construction and real estate company Lendlease as its construction partner for the redevelopment of Selhurst Park in July, representing a significant milestone in moving the project forward.

According to reports by Crystal Palace Media, the club has been undertaking preparatory work, with the club finalizing detailed construction drawings and going out to tender for every detailed area, including steel, cladding, bricks, and glass materials, whilst also building a computerized three-dimensional model of the stadium.
Additionally, there have been minor material amendments to the original design plans that are currently being processed with the council to meet new requirements.

Financial Aspects

Football Ground Guide reports that the financial scale of this project has increased substantially over time.
The funding structure involves loans from club shareholders, with reports suggesting that Parish is looking to raise a further £45 million to fund the redevelopment through the club’s majority shareholders, including Parish himself, John Textor, Josh Harris, and David Blitzer.

However, Parish believes the project will increase the club’s revenue by up to £30 million per season once completed, providing strong financial justification for the investment despite the substantial capital outlay required.

Historical Context and Delays

The project has experienced significant delays since its initial conception. Crystal Palace’s updated planning application for a new Main Stand at Selhurst Park was first approved by Croydon councilors four years ago, but it was delayed by the COVID pandemic, and the club recently submitted minor adjustments to the scheme to adhere to new London Plan requirements.
The club also focused resources on completing its academy development in recent years, which further delayed stadium work.

According to reports by Newsroom, additional complications arose from land negotiations and community impact considerations.
A dispute with Sainsbury’s over land purchase for parking construction played a role in delays, with an agreement eventually signed in December 2022.
The redevelopment also affected residents of Wooderson Close, as the Club has been working with the Council throughout this time to support the households in Wooderson Close, whose homes need to be demolished to make way for the stadium expansion.

Conclusion

Crystal Palace’s stadium redevelopment represents one of the most significant infrastructure projects currently underway in English football.
After years of planning, delays, and negotiations, the project now appears ready to begin construction in summer 2025. The transformation of the Main Stand will modernize a structure built in 1924 and position Selhurst Park as a genuinely competitive Premier League venue with a capacity exceeding 34,000.

With formal planning permission secured, construction partners appointed, and final planning phases underway, the Eagles are finally on the verge of realizing their long-held ambition to create a home fit for the 21st century.
