Amid derby preparations, Liverpool Football Club marked the fifth anniversary of Diogo Jota’s move from Wolverhampton Wanderers to Anfield on September 19, 2025 with tributes from players, fans and officials on social media, particularly X. Liverpool also celebrated his run of 65 goals in 182 appearances and contributions to major trophies.
Deep emotions followed the commemorations of his death at age 28 in a car crash with his brother in July 2025. It included Anfield memorials and the preservation of his number 20 Jersey.
With preparations on the way for the September 20 Merseyside Derby against Everton, there were reflections focused on jota’s final derby winning goal, which Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised Everton’s respectful gestures of condolences and visits after the tragedy struck.
“In our hour of need, Everton reached out in word and in deed to demonstrate that they stood with us.

“David Moyes and Beto visited Anfield publicly to pay their respects to Diogo on behalf of Everton and I am aware that others did the same privately.
“In addition, we reached contact at various levels of the club offering support,” said Arne Slot.
Jota’s final goal which also secured all three points for Anfield came in the Merseyside derby against Everton in April, who they will face for the first time since on Saturday later on today.
Social media, X, recants Beto’s experience with the Red icon and the kind gesture Jota showed him.
“There was a message waiting for me on the day I arrived.
“I’m happy for you. If you need anything in the city, I can help you. Just give me a shout. That was from Diogo Jota. Of all the big names from Portugal that play in England, he was the first one to text me.”
“I saw a togetherness between Everton and Liverpool. Between clubs but more between fans.
“Even if he’s a rival, he’s more than football. It’s life. Life is more than football,” said Beto.
