Out, Out, Out: How All Three World Cup 2026 Co-Hosts Got Sent Packing

Hosting a World Cup is supposed to come with perks. Home crowds. Home advantage. A friendly draw, if you’re lucky. Nobody told Canada, Mexico, and the USA that the script doesn’t always play nice — because for the first time in tournament history, all three co-hosts are officially out, and the Round of 16 chewed them up one by one.

Canada: first to fall, first to history

Canada’s fairytale run through their first-ever World Cup knockout stage hit a wall named Morocco, and it wasn’t pretty. The Atlas Lions were sluggish for a half in Houston, but the moment Azzedine Ounahi woke up, so did the scoreline.

Two goals in the second half, then a stoppage-time dagger from Soufiane Rahimi off a Brahim Diaz assist, and Canada’s dream ended 3-0. The wild part? Morocco managed it with just five shots on target all game — the fewest ever by a winning team in a World Cup knockout match since records began in 1966. Ruthless efficiency over Canadian resistance.

Canada became the first co-host eliminated this tournament, but they leave having reached a knockout round for the first time ever — no small thing for a football-hungry nation still building its soccer culture.

Mexico: heartbreak at home, on home soil

If Canada’s exit stung, Mexico’s was a gut-punch delivered in their own backyard. El Tri had been perfect through the group stage, but England arrived at Estadio Azteca and blitzed them early.

Jude Bellingham scoring twice inside two first-half minutes to stun the home crowd into silence. Julian Jimenez and Raul Jimenez tried to drag Mexico back into it, and even after England went down to 10 men following a Jarell Quansah red card, Harry Kane calmly restored the two-goal cushion from the penalty spot.

Mexico’s late fightback made it 3-2, but it wasn’t enough. England held on for what’s being called one of their best wins on foreign soil in team history — which, if you’re Mexican football, is the kind of stat that stings twice.

USMNT: from magic run to full meltdown

Then came the big one. The USMNT had ridden a wave of confidence into the Round of 16, Folarin Balogun’s suspension controversially lifted just in time for him to start against Belgium in Seattle.

What followed instead was a horror show. Charles De Ketelaere scored twice, Hans Vanaken and a super-sub Romelu Lukaku added more, and Belgium cruised to a 4-1 win that flattered the Americans by full-time. Malik Tillman’s free-kick equalizer was the only bright spark, extinguished within minutes.

Pochettino didn’t dress it up afterward: “We were never in the game. The main responsible one is me.” His contract situation is now up in the air, and a nation that dared to dream of a deep run is left asking hard questions again — the USMNT has now bowed out in the Round of 16 in four of the last five tournaments they’ve reached that stage.

The bigger picture

Three co-hosts, three different heartbreaks, one shared ending: none of them will lift the trophy on home soil. It’s a rare wrinkle in World Cup history — usually hosts ride the wave of home advantage deep into a tournament, but 2026’s expanded 48-team format and brutal knockout draws proved no mercy. Canada leave with pride intact after a historic first knockout appearance. Mexico leave with a nation heartbroken in its own stadium. The USA leave with a coaching decision to make and a performance nobody saw coming.

Meanwhile, the tournament rolls on without its hosts — and somewhere in that irony is the whole beauty of the World Cup: nobody, not even the countries throwing the party, gets to control how the story ends.
