MANCHESTER UNITED SHOCK: The best team won today – A Reuben

After mistakes by goalie Andre Onana, Manchester United lost to Grimsby Town in an epic penalty shootout in the second round of the Carabao Cup, setting a new low under Ruben Amorim.  After lol grabbing just 1 point from two Premier League openers, Amorim was already under duress, and now that they are not playing in Europe, their chances of winning anything this season have been severely damaged.

The match ended 2-2 in regular time, and the League Two team advanced after Bryan Mbeumo missed the 26th penalty in a lengthy shootout.  Both of Grimsby’s goals came from Onana, who made his first appearance of the season. Charles Vernan’s strike in the 22nd minute went through him at his near post, and he missed his punch at a cross, which allowed Tyrell Warren to tap in eight minutes later.  “As far as United and Onana are concerned, it’s car crash TV,” Alan Smith, a co-commentator on Sky Sports, stated.  “It always transmits to your defenders if your custodian is a nervous wreck.”

Grimsby who were denied a second goal in the first half due to a handball ruling against Gardner were also denied a third goal in the second half when Cameron Gardner’s effort was controversially ruled offside after Harry Maguire was considered to have not intentionally played the ball, leading to the striker being put through on goal. There are also speculations of a handball on Warren before the tap-in. Mbeumo, who came on at the start of the second half, reduced the deficit with a well-placed shot marking his first goal for Manchester United. The visitors applied immense pressure on Grimsby in the closing stages, and their efforts finally bore fruit when Maguire scored with a header from a corner with only two minutes left. However, Manchester United couldn’t keep their composure as Matheus Cunha had his penalty saved when he had the opportunity to secure the win in the shootout, and Mbeumo also faltered with his second attempt, increasing the pressure on the team.

Ruben Amorim responded to Manchester United’s loss against Grimsby in the Carabao Cup in penalties, downplaying the idea of a goalkeeper issue by stating that the problems lie within the entire club.

Speaking in am interview after the match Amorim said, “It doesn’t matter if we recover [from 2-0 down] or not. It’s the signs the team made during the game. The beginning of the game.

“I know that the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch. The best players lose, because one team can win against any group of players.

“I think the team and the players spoke really loud today. That’s it. We lost. The best team won.”

When asked to elaborate on what he meant by his players ‘spoke really loud’: “It’s really clear what they spoke. Let’s move on from this day. I think it was really clear for everybody what happened today.

“It’s not just the space, but the way we started the game without any intensity. All the ideas of the pressure, we were completely lost. It’s hard to explain. That’s what they spoke really loud.”

Is it similar to last season?

“That’s the issue. When you lose but notice something different, it feels distinct. When you observe something unusual like today, it’s challenging to discuss.”

“I just want to say I’m really sorry to the fans. The support they give me, the support that they are always, with all the defeats, with the team, today I have nothing to say apart from sorry.

“I think they gave the response on the pitch today. Now, we have a game in the weekend and then two weeks off. We will solve things out.”

Regarding Onana’s performance:

“With all due respect, when you play against a fourth division team, it’s not the goalkeeper, it’s everything. It’s the environment, it’s the way we face the competition. We know that in the moment, people will pay attention to everything, it’s massive – every detail. We showed that performance today. My players spoke for me, really loud.”

Meanwhile, Grimsby head coach David Artell in his own interview after the game expressed disappointment in his side, he hoped they had won the game in 90 minutes rather than going to penalty shootout, “The lads were terrific. They deserve every plaudit that will come their way. It was a terrific night for the club and the whole community. It’s one we’ve been working towards for a long time to get this football club back on the map.

“We played an excellent team with a very good manager, but we’ve got a group of players who want to work for each other and get better every day.

“The disappointing thing is we should have won in 90 minutes. It shouldn’t have gone to the most ridiculous penalty shootout of my whole career.”
