The ongoing financial and legal conflict between Kylian Mbappe and his former club, PSG, has exploded into one of the largest disputes in football history. The case was recently heard in the Paris Industrial Court on November 17th, 2025, with a ruling expected in December.
What initially appeared to be a straightforward wage dispute has evolved into a nearly billion-dollar legal confrontation revolving around claims of unpaid wages and bonuses from the final months of Mbappe’s contract, his subsequent free transfer to Real Madrid in the summer of 2024, and mutual claims of contract breaches, moral harassment, and bad faith.
The Core Financial Claims
ESPN reports that Mbappe has significantly escalated his demands from an initial claim of €55 million in unpaid wages to over €260 million, based on his argument that his fixed-term contract should be reclassified as a permanent employment contract.
This reclassification strategy represents the legal foundation for his expanded claims, as it would trigger additional compensation categories, including unfair dismissal, unpaid wages and bonuses, severance payments, and damages for moral harassment and breaches of duty.
PSG has responded with a counterclaim of €440 million against the striker. The club’s demand centers primarily on compensation for what they characterize as a lost transfer opportunity. PSG is seeking €180 million for the loss of opportunity to complete Mbappe’s transfer after he declined a €300 million offer from Saudi club Al-Hilal in July 2023 and subsequently left as a free agent.
The club is also seeking damages for alleged breaches of good faith in negotiations and contract performance, as well as compensation for reputational and image damage.
The Background to the Dispute

The Independent and ESPN report that the conflict stems from events beginning in 2022, when PSG offered Mbappe what has been described as the most lucrative contract in club history. In June 2023, Mbappé stunned PSG by informing the club he would not exercise his option to extend the contract for an additional year, effectively putting his contract into its final year.
This decision placed PSG in a difficult position, facing the prospect of losing their star player on a free transfer when his contract expired in summer 2024.
Following his decision not to extend, Mbappe was left off a preseason tour to Japan and South Korea and was forced to train with fringe players. PSG excluded him from the opening league game of the season, though he soon returned to the lineup following talks.
This treatment forms the basis of Mbappé’s moral harassment claims, which he describes using the French term” lofting”—the practice of isolating a player from the main squad for administrative or disciplinary reasons.
Recent Developments and Court Proceedings

According to ESPN and Goal.com, the hearing took place on November 17, 2025, at the Parisian labor court, with both parties meeting at 1 pm local time. The case is being heard directly in the judgment chamber, bypassing the preliminary conciliation stage due to Mbappe’s request to have his fixed-term contract reclassified as permanent.
Notably, Mbappe did not personally attend the hearing, though both sides were represented by multiple lawyers.
Earlier in 2025, Mbappe had filed criminal complaints for psychological harassment against PSG, though he subsequently withdrew these complaints.
This withdrawal appears to be part of efforts toward reconciliation, though the financial dispute before the industrial tribunal continues separately.
Earlier in the proceedings, a court order to freeze €55 million in PSG’s accounts was overturned on May 26, 2025.
The parties have also engaged in legal battles before French football authorities, though those bodies ultimately declared themselves unable to enforce decisions due to ongoing preliminary hearings requested by the club before the Paris Judicial Court.
Expected Timeline and Implications
Goal.com reports that while Mbappe has secured his day in court, it is reported that a decision in the case will not be made for several months. However, some sources indicate a decision from the court is expected next month, suggesting there may be some uncertainty about the precise timeline for the ruling.
The case represents unprecedented territory for French labor courts, which are unaccustomed to handling such high-profile disputes involving such substantial sums.
The outcome could have significant implications for how football clubs and players structure contracts and negotiate departures in France.
Mbappe’s legal team has framed the case as having broader significance beyond his individual situation, stating their client is determined to assert his rights for himself and for other players who may have been wronged by their clubs.
The resolution of this dispute will likely influence future employment relationships in French professional football and potentially set important legal precedents regarding player contracts and club obligations.
