Tonight’s fixture at Anfield was all shades of excitement and suspense with United claiming all three points through a surprise header late in the second half of the game. The visitors got an early lead in the first half through Cameroonian forward Mbeumo in the 2nd minute of play which they held on to till late in the second half when Cody Gakpo was able to grab a controversial leveler for Liverpool from a Chiesa cross.
With just six minutes of play time left, Manchester United we’re able to get a second and ultimately the winner through defender Maguire who was able to finely redirect a Fernandes cross past Mamardashvili into the net. Maguire now has six goals for United since the beginning of last campaign with several of the goals coming at clutch moments.
The hosts seemed out of luck on the night as Salah and Gakpo were just yards away from scoring with the later unable to guide a cross from Frimpong into the gaping net as he nodded it just a tad wide of the left post. Salah also missed a one-on-one chance against goalkeeper Bayindir earlier on as he was only able to find the side netting of the right post.
Nine-year jinx broken
This win will serve as a historic reminder of United’s accomplishments at Anfield while also proving to be a stroke of luck and skill to end United’s poor performance at Anfield for the past four years – Manchester United recorded their last win at Marseyside in 2016 under Louis van Gaal.
The win was also a statement that Ruben Amorim’s men are very much in the race for the title this season while also breaking yet another jinx as the visitor now boast of their first back-to-back league win for the first time under Amorim.
