Harry Kane has won the 2026 Ballon d’Or, and English football finally has its golden moment. The Bayern Munich striker beat Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal to become the first Englishman in 25 years to win it. When his name was announced at the London Palladium on Monday night, the England captain said “wow, wow, wow.” Honestly, the rest of us were thinking the same.
A 25-Year Wait Ends in London

The last Englishman to win was Michael Owen in 2001. Kane is just the fifth Englishman ever to take the prize.

He collected the 70th edition of the award in his home city, with Brazil legend Ronaldo presenting it. The crowd chanted “Harry,” and Kane called playing the night in London a good omen. Few players get a night like that, and fewer still get it in front of their own people.
The Numbers Behind Kane’s Ballon d’Or Win

This case was built on goals, and plenty of them. Kane scored 73 goals in 65 games for club and country, 61 of them in 51 for Bayern. That Bayern tally was 19 more than any other player in Europe’s big five leagues.

He won the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal, became the first Englishman named Germany’s player of the year, and scored six at the World Cup as England reached the semi-finals. Jamie Carragher put it simply: only Lionel Messi has scored more in a single season.
How Kane Beat Mbappé and Yamal

This was no easy vote. Mbappé led the scoring charts in La Liga and the Champions League, then became the World Cup’s all-time top scorer with 22 goals. He edged Kane in the Champions League goal race, 15 to 14.

Yamal’s time will come, and he did collect a third straight Kopa Trophy as consolation.

But Kane stayed fit and kept delivering. ESPN’s Bill Connelly counted 81 goals and assists for Kane, 36 more than Yamal. Sofascore’s analysis called Kane’s the most complete season of the three, with a league title, a domestic cup and a huge goal haul.
Patience Pays: Kane’s Road to the Golden Ball

Remember the story that followed Kane for years? Brilliant, but no trophies. That drought ended when he finally won the Bundesliga with Bayern. Even last year, he only finished 13th in the Ballon d’Or vote. One year later, he is on top of the world. There is a lesson there for anyone grinding in silence: keep showing up, keep doing the work, and your season will come.
What Happens Next

Alexia Putellas won her third women’s Ballon d’Or, and Barcelona and Spain dominated most of the other categories. Kane heads back to Bayern as the best player on the planet, and England fans are dreaming big.
