Besiktas 2-2 Crystal Palace was supposed to be the night Pierre Sage’s Eagles got swallowed by the Istanbul cauldron. Instead, this Europa League clash at the Tupras Stadium gave us four goals, two VAR scares, a straight red card and a striker finding his touch again. Besiktas scored through Ndidi and Olaitan, while Palace replied through Pino and Mateta.
Palace Start Fast, Then VAR Steps In

Palace arrived still stinging from a 5-0 defeat at Brighton, and they played like men with something to prove. Jean-Philippe Mateta swept the ball home early, but VAR ruled him marginally offside. The Eagles kept coming. Adam Wharton and Yeremy Pino cut through the Turkish defence, and Mateta forced an excellent save from Alexander Nubel with a volley from Wharton’s corner. Besiktas barely threatened.
Ndidi Punishes Palace Against the Run of Play

Football can be cruel. With their very first shot on target, in first-half stoppage time, Besiktas struck. Wilfried Ndidi ran in behind the back three and fired low into the bottom corner. Palace had dominated and still trailed 1-0 at the break.
Pino and Mateta Flip the Script

The second half belonged to the visitors. Anan Khalaili’s cross was rammed home by Pino after VAR confirmed the wing-back was onside, making it Pino’s third goal in three Europa League games. Four minutes later came the moment of the night. Mateta read a sloppy back pass from Tiago Djalo and slammed it into the net. It was his first goal since the Conference League final. At 2-1, Palace looked ready to steal all three points.
Olaitan Strikes, Akdag Sees Red

Then came the bolt from the blue. Substitute Junior Olaitan sidestepped two challenges on the edge of the box and rifled a low drive into the far corner. Besiktas then went down to ten men when Umit Akdag was sent off for a wild challenge on Jorgen Strand Larsen. The finish was frantic. Daichi Kamada went down inside the box, but referee Danny Makkelie waved away the appeal. Strand Larsen was forced off injured, and Eddie Nketiah’s late effort found only the side netting.
What the Draw Means for Palace and Besiktas

Palace now have four points from three league-phase games. The point ends a two-match losing run after the Lyon and Brighton defeats, but it feels like two points dropped against ten men. Pressure on Sage is not going away either, because Palace have conceded 17 Premier League goals, the most in the division. Next up is Hoffenheim at home in a fortnight.

For Besiktas, the perfect home record in Europe ends, but they stay unbeaten in the Europa League. Dusan Vlahovic came off the bench and is still waiting for his first goal in the competition.

Whatever the table says, this was a night that showed Palace’s fight. Football gives no guarantees, only chances, and the Eagles took theirs twice. Keep following ShapHub Sport Blog for more Europa League reaction and match reports.
