Liverpool vs Villarreal had everything a Champions League night at Anfield should have: an early shock, a wobbly defence, a teenage star, a second-half storm and a nervy finish. Andoni Iraola’s side came from two goals down to win 4-3 on Tuesday, and Liverpool are now perfect after three games in the league phase.
A Nightmare Start at Anfield

It took only four minutes for the party to turn sour. Virgil van Dijk’s poor header gave Georges Mikautadze a gift, and he took it. It was Liverpool’s earliest deficit at Anfield in a major European tie for 25 years. Worse followed in the 29th minute, when Sergi Cardona raced through to finish a slick Villarreal move and make it 2-0.
Mac Allister and Araújo Turn the Tide

Then came the fightback. Kostas Tsimikas whipped in a corner and Alexis Mac Allister headed it home in the 36th minute. In first-half stoppage time, Ronald Araújo ghosted in at the far post, with Cardona fast asleep, to make it 2-2 after a cross from teenage winger Rio Ngumoha. Anfield was roaring again.
Rio Ngumoha Runs the Show

The star of the night was 18-year-old Rio Ngumoha, whose dancing feet and fearless dribbling tormented Cardona all evening. In the 65th minute he beat his man, drove to the byline and squared the ball, and Mac Allister squeezed a first-time finish under the crossbar for 3-2.

Three minutes later, Florian Wirtz, introduced at halftime for Araújo, finished low with his left foot past Peter Gulácsi to make it 4-2. It was his first goal since April.
A Nervy Finish

Tani Oluwaseyi pulled one back for Villarreal in the 87th minute, and Anfield held its breath, but Liverpool survived. They had 22 shots to Villarreal’s 14 and just over half the possession, yet they have now conceded three goals in each of their last two Champions League games. They won both, but Iraola will want a calmer evening soon.
What It Means for Liverpool

Three wins from three keeps Liverpool near the top of the Champions League table, level on points with leaders PSG but behind them on goal difference. The win follows a 2-1 victory at Brentford on Saturday, where Alexander Isak scored the winner, and it arrives before a League Cup tie against Chelsea at Anfield on October 28.

The bigger story may be what the comeback revealed. Wirtz has ended a long wait for a goal, Ngumoha looks ready for the biggest stage, and Mac Allister keeps popping up in big moments. Defensive questions remain, but belief like this can carry a season.
Final Whistle

Liverpool 4-3 Villarreal was loud, chaotic and unforgettable, exactly the kind of night that makes the Champions League special. Bookmark this page for more match reports, analysis and Reds news, and tell us in the comments who was your man of the match.
