NEW: Ghana Lose 4-2 to Gambia After Leading 2-0: Black Stars’ Shock AFCON 2027 Qualifier Defeat

West Africa’s big two picked the same night to fall apart. On Tuesday 29 September 2026, the Super Eagles lost 3-0 in Guinea-Bissau, and hours later their old Jollof rivals Ghana lost 4-2 at home to Gambia. Evil twin is putting it kindly. Ghana had a two-goal lead in Accra, and by the end of the night they had somehow handed over all three points.

How Ghana Threw Away a 2-0 Lead

Everything looked perfect early. Ghana started brightly, and Nuamah calmly converted a penalty in the 27th minute after Jerome Opoku was fouled following a corner. Six minutes later, Afena-Gyan curled in a free kick from the edge of the box. Two-nil, home crowd roaring.

Then came the collapse. Gambia hit back straight away and levelled before half-time, with reports describing a five-minute wobble that flipped the game. After the break, Ghana were exposed on counter-attacks and defensive mistakes. Gambia went 3-2 up, and Colley wrapped it up late with his second goal of the night to make it 4-2.

Why This Loss Hurts So Much

This was Ghana’s second straight defeat after the 2-0 loss to Ivory Coast in Bouake on 24 September. Coach Carlos Queiroz made three changes for the Gambia game, including a start in goal for Benjamin Asare, but the defence still cracked. Ghana have now conceded six goals in two games, and Adomonline reports it is the first time the Black Stars have let in four in an AFCON qualifier.

The bigger picture is uglier. YEN.com.gh notes Ghana are winless in seven straight AFCON qualifiers, with their last victory coming in September 2023. This is also a team that missed the 2025 tournament and exited the 2026 World Cup in the Round of 32.

Group C Table: Gambia Are Flying

Gambia beat Somalia 2-1 in their opener and now have six points, three clear of Ivory Coast. Ghana are bottom with none. Predictive models gave Ghana a decent chance of qualifying before this game, but that outlook now looks far shakier.

Nigeria and Ghana: A Shared Nightmare

Here is the twist that has West African fans laughing to keep from crying. Both giants lost on the same night to opponents many wrote off. Football has no respect for reputation, and Gambia and Guinea-Bissau just reminded everyone of that. Hard truth, but a fair one: names do not score goals, and pride does not defend corners.

What Happens Next for the Black Stars

The next stop is a friendly against Morocco on 4 October, followed by more qualifiers. Ghana still have four group games left, and the numbers say the door is not fully closed. What Queiroz needs is a defence that stays awake for 90 minutes and a team that finishes what it starts. Every fallen giant gets one chance to answer with action.
