Due to Manchester United’s keeper overhaul, André Onana has agreed to join Turkish side, Trabzonspor in a season-long loan move. The Cameroonian national joined Manchester United for £43m in 2023 but has since been deemed unfit for a number 1 role on the team. Onana who started the Europa League final with a defeat to Tottenham sustained an injury to his hamstring at the start of pre-season training. He has missed all of United’s warmup games including the Premier League’s three opening games.
However, he made the starting line up in the EFL Cup game against Grimsby which he made an error that resulted to a goal against Manchester United. Onana and Altay Bayindir had been fated to leave Manchester United since the arrival of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on deadline day.
Withal, Manchester United’s officials stated that the club was willing to have a senior team with four goalkeepers against the desire of head Coach Amorim to have a smaller squad in the absence of European football.
The move is yet to be finalized as Turkey’s transfer will remain open till Friday, but sources say the deal will likely fall through to avail him the opportunity to make a debut on Sunday 14 September against Fenerbahçe.
Onana who is currently on international duty with Cameroon had been linked with Turkish side Galatasaray as well but they settled for Ugurcan Cakir who joined Galatasaray from Trabzonspor on 2 September in a deal that is estimated to be worth €36m.
Club sources say Trabzonspor has been in the market for a replacement since Cakir’s deal fell through and Onana has been a favorite.
