Forget the group stage. Forget the quarterfinals. Everything that has happened at this World Cup has been building toward one afternoon in Atlanta.

Today, 3pm ET, Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Argentina vs. England. A World Cup semifinal between the sport’s oldest, angriest rivalry — and, for the first time ever, a stage that puts Lionel Messi directly across the pitch from Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane’s England. Twenty-one years since these two nations last met at a World Cup. Forty years since the Hand of God. And maybe, just maybe, the last dance for the greatest player of his generation.

Messi’s Last Real Shot

Lionel Messi is 39 years old. He has already done everything — Qatar 2022 finally gave him his World Cup, completing football’s most decorated résumé. But this is different. This is the shot at something almost no one has ever managed: back-to-back World Cup titles, a feat no nation has pulled off since Brazil in 1958 and 1962.

Messi has been magnificent again — 8 goals, extending his own record to 21 World Cup goals all-time, scoring in every match right up until the quarterfinal against Switzerland. Even in the one game he didn’t find the net, he still set up Alexis Mac Allister’s opener. If Argentina are getting through this, it’s because their No. 10 is somehow still doing this at 39.

England’s 60-Year Wait

On the other side stands a England side that hasn’t won it all since 1966 — an ache that’s been passed down through generations of heartbreak. This time, though, feels different. Thomas Tuchel’s team has been dragged through the wringer to get here: ten men and a nervy 3-2 win over Mexico, two late Harry Kane goals to escape DR Congo, and then Jude Bellingham delivering an absolute masterclass against Norway — a stunning dribble-and-finish to level the game, then the composure to bury the rebound in extra time.

Here’s the number that tells the story: England have scored 13 goals at this tournament, and 12 of them belong to just two players — Kane and Bellingham. It’s been a two-man carry job, and today, against the best player alive, it might have to be again.

The Rivalry That Never Needs an Introduction

England vs. Argentina doesn’t need hype. Maradona’s Hand of God in ’86. Beckham’s red card in ’98. This fixture has produced some of football’s most iconic, contentious, unforgettable moments — and Opta’s supercomputer is basically shrugging, giving England a 38.9% chance and Argentina 34.1%, with the rest split on a coin flip toward extra time. Translation: nobody actually knows what’s about to happen.

What’s on the Line

The winner books a date with an ice-cold, ruthless Spain side in Sunday’s final at MetLife Stadium — a Spain team that just battered France 2-0 and hasn’t lost in 37 matches. Whoever survives Atlanta today will need everything they have left in the tank.

Messi chasing immortality. Bellingham and Kane chasing a nation’s 60-year dream. One stadium, one afternoon, and a World Cup final on the line.

Buckle up — this one’s going to be chaos.
