It’s Official: The World Cup Semifinals Are the Dream Draw Nobody Saw Coming

Forty-eight teams. Five weeks. And somehow, football has delivered exactly the semifinals lineup every neutral secretly wanted. France vs Spain. England vs Argentina. Two ties so stacked with quality that pretty much every football fan alive has a rooting interest in at least one of them.

Here’s the wild part: this is the first World Cup ever where the top four teams in the FIFA rankings have all reached the final four. France sit at No. 1, Argentina at No. 2, Spain at No. 3, and England at No. 4. No co-host magic, no surprise package sneaking through — just the best of the best, standing where they’re supposed to stand.

France vs Spain: Tuesday, July 14 — AT&T Stadium, Arlington

This is the heavyweight bout of the round, and the numbers back it up. France are outscoring opponents 16-2 across the tournament and go in as favorites to lift the trophy outright. Kylian Mbappe — already France’s all-time leading scorer at just 27, with 63 goals in 103 caps — is the favorite for both the Golden Boot and the Golden Ball, while Michael Olise leads the entire tournament in assists.

Spain, though, bring something France haven’t had to face yet: a defense that simply does not concede. La Roja have played five games at this World Cup without letting in a single goal, extending their World Cup clean sheet streak to six matches — the longest in tournament history. The backline of Cucurella, Laporte, Cubarsi and Porro, shielding keeper Unai Simon, has played every knockout minute together. Add in teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, the favorite for Young Player of the Tournament, and you have an genuinely irresistible force meeting an immovable object.

England vs Argentina: Wednesday, July 15 — Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta

If the first semifinal is a chess match, this one is pure theatre. Argentina are chasing history: back-to-back World Cup titles, something no team has managed since Brazil in 1962. Lionel Messi, at 39, is somehow still doing Messi things, and a win here would make him the first captain in history to lift two World Cups with the armband on. His supporting cast — Alvarez, Lautaro Martinez, Enzo Fernandez — proved against Switzerland they can win it without him scoring, which should terrify everyone left in the draw.

England, meanwhile, are riding the Jude Bellingham show. Six goals in six games, back-to-back match-winning performances against Mexico and Norway, and a growing sense around the camp that this is finally the golden generation’s moment — 60 years removed from England’s only World Cup title. Add Harry Kane’s six goals of his own, and Tuchel’s side has more firepower than the “sloppy” label he gave them after the Norway win suggests.

Buckle Up

Two legends in Messi and Mbappe, two of the form players on the planet in Bellingham and Yamal, and a Spanish defense that hasn’t been breached all summer. Whichever way you cut it, we’re two matches away from a final that could be an all-time classic. Third-place playoff and final details land after Wednesday’s action — but for now, mark your calendars: this is must-watch football.
