Oh, Barcelona. You just can’t keep it simple, can you?

While the rest of the football world is glued to World Cup preparations, a financial storm is quietly brewing back in Catalonia — and it has nothing to do with transfers or wage bills. FC Barcelona, one of the richest and most storied clubs on the planet, are reportedly running out of money to finish renovating their own stadium. Yes, really.

The Dream That Got Very Expensive, Very Fast

Let’s rewind a little. Back in 2023, Barcelona launched the ambitious Espai Barça project — a sweeping, jaw-dropping renovation of the iconic Camp Nou that would transform it into the largest stadium in Europe, with a jaw-dropping capacity of 105,000 seats. The plan included a gleaming new roof, over 9,400 VIP seats, a brand-new Palau Blaugrana arena, a hotel, and a complete overhaul of the surrounding Les Corts area. Grand, right?

To fund it all, the club secured a colossal €1.45 billion loan from a group of investors led by Goldman Sachs. That’s billion, with a B. And yet, here we are in June 2026, with the stadium only partially open, the roof nowhere in sight, and the money essentially gone.

According to reports from Diari Ara, corroborated by MARCA and Catalunya Radio, Joan Laporta’s board has acknowledged that the planned budget will not be sufficient to finish the renovation, and the club are now preparing to ask members for permission to increase the credit line. Lovely stuff.

How Did €1.45 Billion Run Out?

Great question. The original renovation budget was set at €960 million — already a staggering figure. But as any homeowner who’s ever started a bathroom renovation knows, costs have a funny habit of spiralling. The final cost of the renovation is now expected to be between €200 million and €300 million more than expected, taking the total cost to over €1.2 billion.

And that’s just the stadium itself. The wider Espai Barça project — the Palau, the hotel, the surrounding development — hasn’t even been properly started within the original budget. It’s believed that more than 70 per cent of the total funding had already been spent by the end of 2025, with work still continuing on the third tier and significant future phases still to come, including the installation of the stadium roof.

The roof, by the way, is not a minor detail. It’s literally the last and most complex stage of the entire project, requiring the installation of compression rings that will force the team to temporarily vacate the stadium at the start of the 2027–28 season. Where exactly they’ll play during that period? Nobody knows yet. Not ideal.

The €500 Million Ask Nobody Wanted to Make

Here’s where it gets truly wild. According to Catalunya Radio, Barcelona will ask for between €400 million and €500 million on top of the €1.45 billion already secured. Half a billion euros. Extra. On top of what was already the most expensive stadium renovation in European history — one that already dwarfs the cost of building the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium from scratch.

The most likely moment for this request is the Extraordinary General Meeting scheduled for next July, where the president-elect will also appoint his new governing body. In other words, Barça’s socios — the club members who ultimately have ownership — will have to vote on whether to approve yet another mountainous loan. Expect fireworks in that meeting room.

The Light at the End of the Very Expensive Tunnel

To be fair to Barcelona, the vision is genuinely spectacular. Once the Spotify Camp Nou is totally finished and operational, consulting firm Legends predicted Barça would generate €346 million per year from the stadium alone, with president Laporta himself estimating figures above €400 million annually — including €120 million from VIP seats and €80 million from the new museum.

The stadium did partially reopen in November 2025 to widespread fanfare, and Camp Nou is currently operating at a capacity of 62,657 as work continues. The bones of something extraordinary are clearly there.

But right now, in June 2026, with the roof missing, the Palau unbuilt, and another half-billion-euro ask on the table, Barcelona fans on X have every right to be asking: who on earth is minding the budget?

Mes que un club — and apparently, more debt than anyone budgeted for.
