Somebody should have told Ivory Coast they weren’t supposed to win this one.
In a jaw-dropping night at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes, the Elephants stunned World Cup favourites France 2–1 in an international friendly — delivering the first-ever victory in Ivory Coast’s history against Les Bleus. Let that sink in. First. Ever. After all the times these two nations have met, it took a drama-packed pre-World Cup warm-up to finally make it happen.
Didier Deschamps and France? They’ll want to forget this night quickly. The World Cup is less than two weeks away.
France Look the Part — Until They Don’t

Here’s the story within the story: Guéla Doué — older brother of France and PSG forward Désiré Doué — plays for Ivory Coast. And on Thursday night, Guéla was absolutely determined to haunt his little brother’s national team.

A brilliantly weighted defence-splitting pass from substitute Nicolas Pépé played him in, and he slotted the ball coolly past Maignan. The Stade de la Beaujoire went quiet. France pushed for a winner — 15 shot attempts, 59% possession, 8 corners. The stats were all theirs. But goalkeepers save games, and Fofana was having the night of his life, making five saves to keep the Elephants in it.
Amad Diallo Writes the Final Twist
84th minute. The game seemed to be heading for a draw when Guéla Doué — yes, him again — whipped in a cross from the right. Manchester United forward Amad Diallo arrived at the back post and stroked the ball home first time. 2–1 Ivory Coast.
The away end went absolutely wild. Diallo wheeled away in celebration. France looked shellshocked. The final whistle blew, and the Elephants had made history.
What Does This Mean?
Let’s be clear: it’s a friendly. Rotations happened. Key players didn’t play full games. All of that is true.
But France open their World Cup campaign against Senegal on June 16 in New Jersey, and they still have one more warm-up against Northern Ireland on Monday. There are defensive questions to sort, and the second-half capitulation — giving up two goals to a team they had comfortably at bay — won’t make Deschamps sleep easy.
Meanwhile, Ivory Coast are heading into their World Cup opener against Ecuador on June 15 riding an incredible wave of confidence. They’re back at their first World Cup since 2014, they finished qualifying unbeaten without conceding a single goal, and now they’ve beaten France in France.
