Inter Milan secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Sassuolo at the San Siro in the fourth match of the season. They now sit in tenth place in the league standings with six points in what was their second win of the season.
Inter got an early opener in the 14th minute through the efforts of Frederick Dimarco who found himself in space and shot the ball past Muric into the back of the net.
The home side dominated the game and found a second goal after the break in the 81st minute through an Augusto’s long range effort which came off Tarik Muharemovic before deflecting into the bottom corner and was considered an own goal.
Three minutes later Sassuolo pulled one back as Walid Cheddira picked up a throughball from Berardi and sent it into the bottom-right corner but this wasn’t enough to spur the visitors to a full comeback as the host held on for a victory.
Coach Chivu had made four changes from Inter’s Champions League outing as Martinez came in for Sommer. Defensively Acerbi and Augusto came on for Bastoni and De Vrij who drop to the substitution list. Finally Sucic replaced Mkhitaryan who drops to the bench.
While Grosso of Sassuolo made just one swap in defense from their squad who won Lazio; Coulibaly replaces Walukiewicz who missed out on the game entirely.
Prior to the game, both teams had a balanced record of 10 wins each with two draws between them. Inter were just coming off consecutive defeats in the Serie A – against Udinese and Juventus, and had not suffered three consecutive league defeats since April 2023. Besides they have lost three of their first four games in a top-flight campaign only once in 1983/84 under Luigi Radice.
Inter will be hosting Slavia Prague next for the second match of their UEFA Champions League campaign while Sassuolo will head on to face Como for the second round of the Coppa Italia.
