NEW: Messi Buys Cornellà: Lionel Messi Acquires Fifth-Tier Spanish Club

Date: 9th December, 2025
Kick-Off: 21:00pm WAT
Venue: Stadio di Bergamo, Bergamo

Match Context and Significance

The two clubs come into this encounter sharing identical records: 10 points apiece from 5 outings, with each having secured 3 victories, drawn once, and suffered a single defeat.

Chelsea currently sits in 7th place in the league phase standings, while Atalanta is three spots lower in 10th.
What separates them?? The Blues boast a healthier goal difference of +6 against Atalanta’s modest plus-one.

For both squads, this match carries real weight. A positive result here would significantly bolster their chances of securing direct passage into the knockout rounds.

Interestingly, these two sides have never previously faced each other in competitive action.
Atalanta’s overall encounters with English clubs have been somewhat challenging—they’ve won their last 3 matches against Premier League opposition, drawn 3, and lost 4.
Chelsea, meanwhile, has enjoyed similar success against Italian sides, stringing together 3 straight wins while keeping clean sheets throughout.

Form Analysis

Atalanta got off to a rough start in this season’s Champions League, suffering a heavy 4-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in their opener. Since that setback, though, they’ve been solid. The Italian outfit hasn’t tasted defeat in their next 4 European matches, picking up wins against Club Brugge, Marseille, and Eintracht Frankfurt, while managing a scoreless stalemate with Slavia Prague. Their league form, however, tells a different story. They’re coming off a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Hellas Verona this past weekend in Serie A—hardly the kind of result that builds momentum heading into a crucial European tie.

Chelsea also had a shaky beginning to their campaign, dropping their opening match 3-1 to Bayern Munich back in September. But they’ve steadied the ship since then, going unbeaten through their subsequent 4 Champions League fixtures. Their most recent European outing saw them dismantle Barcelona 3-0, which has them sitting pretty as they approach the final stretch of the league phase.

Back home in England, though, things haven’t been quite as rosy for Enzo Maresca’s men. They’re currently enduring a 3-game winless streak in the Premier League, which includes a loss to Leeds United and a stalemate with Bournemouth.

Tactical Considerations

Chelsea’s attacking numbers in Europe look pretty impressive—12 goals across 5 games, with 70 attempts on goal and 26 hitting the target. Maresca’s side clearly knows how to fashion chances and, crucially, how to finish them off. Atalanta’s output has been more modest with 6 goals from 5 fixtures, though their 78 shots suggest they’re certainly not sitting back.

Looking at the numbers ESPN has been tracking, we’re probably in for a goal-fest. 4 out of Chelsea’s 5 Champions League matches this season have produced at least 3 goals. Both teams like to push bodies forward, which generally makes for the kind of open, end-to-end football that produces chances—and goals—at both ends of the pitch.

Team News & Availability

Atalanta will have to make do without Kamaldeen Sulemana and Mitchel Bakker, who are sidelined with muscle and anterior cruciate ligament injuries, respectively. Manager Raffaele Palladino is expected to shake things up after that deflating loss to Verona. Gianluca Scamacca looks set to get the nod up front. Former Chelsea man Davide Zappacosta probably won’t start against his old club—Nicola Zalewski is the likely choice on the left side instead.

Chelsea: Get some welcome news with Moises Caicedo back available. His suspension only applies to domestic matches, so he’s good to go here. Cole Palmer should be ready after getting some minutes against Bournemouth, but the squad’s still missing Levi Colwill, Romeo Lavia, Dario Essugo, and Mykhaylo Mudryk.

Liam Delap won’t be back anytime soon after picking up a shoulder injury over the weekend. Palmer’s fitness is particularly important for Chelsea’s attacking plans as they look to get back to winning ways.

Key Battlegrounds

The engine room is where this match will likely be won and lost. Having Caicedo back gives Chelsea much better protection in front of their defense and helps them move the ball forward more effectively. Atalanta’s central pairing—probably Marten de Roon alongside Ederson—will need to dictate the rhythm and keep Chelsea’s more creative players under wraps. If Cole Palmer is fully fit, his individual brilliance could easily swing this match.

Neither side has exactly been rock-solid at the back this season. Chelsea are dealing with Colwill’s absence and are still working through the teething problems of adapting to Maresca’s system, which has led to some shaky moments defensively. Atalanta’s form at home has been hit-and-miss, potentially leaving gaps for Chelsea’s attackers to exploit.

Prediction

Everything about these two teams points toward goals. Chelsea’s recent European performances and superior goal difference suggest they’ve got what it takes to leave Bergamo with something to show for their efforts. That said, Atalanta’s home support and their strong track record against English teams mean they can’t be written off.

For both clubs, this represents a crucial chance to cement their positions in those coveted automatic qualification spots ahead of the final two rounds of matches in the league phase.
