57 year old Christopher John Wilder is set to return to Sheffield United a day after the sacking of Ruben Selles who had to be let off after fifth straight loss in the EFL Championship and putting the blades at the bottom of the table with no points.
Wilder who first took charge of the club in May 2016 was dismissed by Sheffield for the second time last season when they lost to Sunderland in the Championship playoff final, thereby passing up on a chance to return to the Premier League. He was replaced by Ruben Selles who was sacked on Sunday following a 5-0 loss to Ipswich Town on Friday.
Wilder has overseen 138 games for Sheffield in the Championship, and has won 74 of those games leaving him with 28 draws and 36 losses. His new contract will last till 2027.
The United’s board issued a statement saying, “following a difficult start to the season, the board felt it necessary to make a change in order to stabilize performances and strengthen our push for promotion.”
“While the adoption of a different style of play was pursued with ambition, results have clearly not met expectations.
“Chris Wilder returns with proven leadership and an unparalleled understanding of Sheffield United. We are. Confident he is the right person to restore momentum, unite the squad and supporters, and deliver the results necessary to achieve our objectives this season.
“We would like to thank Ruben Selles for his hard work and professionalism during his time at the club. Responsibility for recent results lies with us as owners, and we remain fully committed to supporting the team and pursuing promotion.”
Wilder has an ample amount of time to get United up the table and will be up against Charlton Athletic on Saturday at Bramall Lane.
