Real Madrid’s Enzo Fernandez Denial: Why the Rumors Refuse to Die

Six months ago, most Premier League fans had never heard the name Gonzalo Garcia. Now he might be about to become Fulham’s biggest signing of the summer, and the story behind it is one of the most compelling subplots of this transfer window.

From Madrid Reserve to Golden Boot Winner

Garcia is a pure product of Real Madrid’s famed La Fabrica academy, the same production line that gave the world Raphael Varane and Dani Carvajal. He made his senior debut back in November 2023 under Carlo Ancelotti, but it was last summer’s Club World Cup that turned him from academy squad filler into a genuine first-team asset. Garcia top-scored the entire tournament with four goals, dragging Real Madrid to the semi-finals almost single-handedly and walking away with the Golden Boot. The reward was a long-term contract extension through 2030.

But senior football at the Bernabeu has been a different challenge. With Kylian Mbappe entrenched as the undisputed starting striker, Garcia made just nine La Liga starts last season despite featuring in 39 matches overall. Promise without playing time is a familiar trap for academy graduates at elite clubs, and it is exactly the situation Fulham are now looking to exploit.

Enter Alvaro Arbeloa

This is where the transfer gets genuinely interesting. Fulham’s new head coach is Alvaro Arbeloa, the former Real Madrid defender who mentored Garcia through the academy system and coached him at first-team level before making the move to west London. Arbeloa is reportedly the driving force behind the pursuit, personally involved in talks with his old club to bring his protege across.

It would mark Fulham’s first external signing of the summer, and the timing lines up perfectly with their need for firepower. Raul Jimenez has departed to rejoin Wolves, Harry Wilson has also left, and Rodrigo Muniz spent much of last season sidelined by injury, including hamstring surgery that cost him 20 games. Fulham need a reliable centre-forward, and Arbeloa believes he already knows exactly who fits the bill.

The Complication: Real Madrid Won’t Let Go Completely

Jose Mourinho’s arrival at the Bernabeu briefly threw a wrench into the deal. Reports suggested Mourinho wanted to evaluate Garcia in pre-season before signing off on any exit, and while he reportedly rates the striker highly, he has stopped short of promising him regular minutes with Mbappe still first choice.

That has left the final call with Garcia himself. Real Madrid, for their part, are not expected to release him without conditions. Expect any agreement to include a buy-back clause or matching rights, a structure the club has used consistently when letting academy graduates leave.

What Happens Next

Fulham are also reportedly chasing fellow Arbeloa favorites Franco Mastantuono and Cesar Palacios, suggesting a wider plan to rebuild the squad around players the new manager already trusts. Whether Garcia becomes the headline arrival of that project depends on how much Real Madrid are willing to compromise, and how much first-team football actually matters to a 22-year-old who just won a Golden Boot on the world stage.

For Fulham fans, the message is simple: this one is worth watching closely.
