NEW: Thunder, Lightning, and Mbappé: The Night the World Cup Got Washed Out

Philadelphia had a plan for Monday evening. France would beat Iraq, Mbappé would score, and the world would watch Les Bleus cruise into the knockout rounds of the 2026 World Cup. The weather, however, had a completely different plan.

What unfolded at Lincoln Financial Field was one of the most chaotic, bizarre, and ultimately thrilling nights of this tournament so far — a World Cup first, a milestone-laden performance from one of football’s greatest, and two hours of fans huddled in stadium concourses wondering if the whole thing was even going to finish.

Before the Storm

France entered this match as tournament favourites. After dismantling Senegal 3-1 in their opener with Mbappé bagging a brace, Les Bleus were exactly where they wanted to be. Iraq, beaten 4-1 by Norway, were already on life support.

On a historic night — his 100th international appearance — Mbappé opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Michael Olise drove down the right, his initial pass was blocked, he regained the ball and slid it to Mbappé at the edge of the box. The French captain drilled a powerful left-footed shot past goalkeeper Ahmed Basil. One-nil. Another day at the office.

Then, in the 37th minute, the skies over Philadelphia cracked open.

Welcome to America

Rain had been threatening all day. A Flood Watch had been in effect since 2 p.m., and stadium gates had even been briefly delayed before the game. But when the storm finally arrived, it arrived with purpose — sheets of rain hammering Lincoln Financial Field sideways, fans scrambling for their ponchos, and the pitch slowly turning into something resembling a paddling pool.

At halftime, the players walked off the pitch to 1-0 — and then didn’t come back for two hours and ten minutes.

The big screens around the stadium flashed a message: “A severe thunderstorm is approaching, please exit the open seating area and seek shelter in the stadium as directed by the stadium staff.” Thousands of fans abandoned their seats and packed into the concourse, dripping wet, watching crews squeegee standing water off the Kentucky bluegrass surface below. The initial announcement said 30 minutes. Then another 30. Then another. FIFA rules state that if lightning is detected within eight miles of a venue, play is halted for 30 minutes — and every new lightning strike resets the clock entirely.

Iraq coach Graham Arnold spent the delay in the covered dugout after a brief battle with his rain poncho. France’s Didier Deschamps showed his players first-half clips and presumably remained unruffled — he’s French. Teams finally returned to warm up to loud cheers just before 8 p.m. The pitch was still sodden.

Back to Business

If the break disrupted France at all, it didn’t show. In the 54th minute, Iraq’s defence made a catastrophic backpass error, Dembélé pressed the goalkeeper into fumbling it, and Mbappé was there to tap home into an empty net. Effortless. Inevitable. That goal took his World Cup career tally to 16, drawing him level with Miroslav Klose — and just two behind Messi’s new all-time record of 18.

Then, in the 66th minute, Ousmane Dembélé — Ballon d’Or holder, World Cup late bloomer — finally got himself on the scoresheet. Olise set him up inside the box and Dembélé drilled a low right-footed finish into the bottom corner. His first ever World Cup goal, and his first at any major international tournament. The milestone had been a long time coming.

France won 3-0. Through to the Round of 32 with a game to spare. And somewhere in the Philadelphia concourse, a few thousand soaking-wet supporters agreed it was absolutely worth the wait.

Man of the Match: Mbappe
