He won everything Europe had to offer. Five Champions Leagues. Three Premier League titles. A World Cup on the horizon. And now? Casemiro is swapping the Theatre of Dreams for South Beach — and MLS is about to get a whole lot more dangerous.

Transfer oracle Fabrizio Romano dropped the announcement the football world had been waiting for: “Inter Miami complete deal to sign Casemiro as new midfielder, HERE WE GO!” The 34-year-old Brazilian midfielder has agreed to join Inter Miami as a free agent after departing Manchester United, and he’ll officially arrive during MLS’s secondary transfer window, which runs from July 13 to September 2.

Miami wanted him. LA Galaxy wanted him. The Saudi Pro League waved serious money in his direction. And still, Casemiro chose the pink and black. He chose Messi. He chose Miami.
From Old Trafford to South Beach

Let’s rewind. Casemiro announced back in January that he would leave Manchester United when his contract expired on June 30 — ending a four-year spell in the Premier League. His time at Old Trafford was a tale of two very different chapters. The early years under Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim were messy, often painful, as United stumbled through tactical confusion. But under Michael Carrick, Casemiro rediscovered himself entirely.

Playing alongside the revitalised Kobbie Mainoo in a classic 4-2-3-1, the Brazilian was the bedrock of United’s late-season surge to Champions League qualification. The Old Trafford faithful spent his final matches serenading him with chants of “One More Year.” United’s hierarchy made a calculated decision — his £350,000-per-week salary had to come off the books. Casemiro had the last laugh by going out on an absolute high.

Across 160 appearances for United, he averaged 2.98 tackles per game, won 5.81 duels per match, and posted a Sofascore rating of 7.27 — numbers that tell the story of a midfielder who never once stopped competing.
The Miami Dream — And the GOAT Connection
Here’s where this transfer gets truly special. By joining Inter Miami, Casemiro doesn’t just enter MLS — he enters football history. He will become one of only 27 players in the world who have shared a pitch with both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo at senior level. Years of battles alongside Ronaldo at Real Madrid, winning Champions League after Champions League. Now? A new chapter alongside Messi, chasing MLS glory in Florida.

The chance to play with Messi was reportedly a major pull for the Brazilian, and Inter Miami teammate Telasco Segovia let the secret slip before the ink had even dried. “I know Casemiro is coming. He’s a great player,” Segovia said. “I believe he will give us so much.”

He will, and here’s why. Inter Miami have been short in central midfield ever since Sergio Busquets retired at the end of the 2025 season. Nobody adequately filled that void. Casemiro fills it completely — a ball-winning, tempo-controlling, leadership-oozing presence that frees Messi, De Paul, and the attackers to do what they do best.
One Small Hurdle Remaining
There’s a subplot worth noting. Before the deal can be officially stamped, Inter Miami must first negotiate a compensation package with LA Galaxy, who hold Casemiro’s “discovery rights” — an MLS roster mechanism giving them priority to negotiate with the player. Miami can’t sign him until that deal is resolved. It’s a formality everyone expects to be cleared quickly, but MLS bureaucracy has a way of complicating the straightforward.

Once it’s done, South Beach will have a new general. And the rest of MLS better be ready — because Inter Miami just got even more frightening.
The Galácticos era is gone. Welcome to the Herons era.
