Nobody said the road to glory was going to be easy. And on Wednesday night in Santa Clara, in front of a roaring home crowd, the USMNT proved they have the heart, the guts, and the character to handle anything thrown at them — including losing their best player on the night.
Final score: USA 2-0 Bosnia-Herzegovina. But this was so much more than a scoreline.

The Americans came into this Round of 32 clash as favourites, carrying the energy of a nation on their backs as co-hosts. Bosnia, however, didn’t arrive in California to roll over. The Dragons soaked up American pressure early, rotated their defenders nimbly, and largely funnelled play toward the edges — patient, disciplined, and dangerous on the counter. As halftime approached, the US had managed only a single shot on target. Balogun was visibly frustrated, claiming shirt-pulling, having a goal ruled out for offside in the 33rd minute and even swiping the ground in anger.

Then came the breakthrough, and it was beautifully constructed. Tim Ream forced a turnover in the middle of the field, sending the ball to Tyler Adams, who played a deft flick to Tillman. The pass took a fortuitous deflection off a Bosnian defender, and the ball fell to Balogun — who rolled it calmly under the goalkeeper. 1-0 USA. His third goal of the tournament. The San Francisco Bay Area exploded. ESPN
But then the night took a dramatic turn.

In the 64th minute, Balogun was sent off with a red card after a VAR review ruled his challenge as serious foul play — a decision that sparked immediate controversy.

Coach Mauricio Pochettino was furious. “For me, never was it a red card,” he said in the post-match press conference. “Never was it the intention to step on the player. That was a normal action in football. It happened by accident.”

VAR review later backed that assessment, concluding that protocols had been misapplied. But in the moment, none of that mattered — the US were down to ten men, protecting a one-goal lead against a desperate Bosnian side.
Bosnia sensed blood. They pushed, they pressed, they threw men forward. And for a while, the anxiety inside Levi’s Stadium was palpable. But this USMNT team didn’t fold. They dug in. They fought.

And then Malik Tillman delivered the moment of the tournament.

In the 82nd minute, Tillman curled a gorgeous free kick past the Bosnian wall and into the net, sealing the win with ten men — sending the stadium into delirium. “I’ve been dreaming about maybe taking a free kick and scoring a free kick,” Tillman said afterwards. Dreams really do come true. ESPN

It was only the second World Cup knockout-stage win in US programme history and the first since 2002. Twenty-four years of hurt — gone. The Americans also ended a 10-game losing streak against European opposition in the process. ESPN

The bad news? Balogun will miss the Round of 16 due to suspension. Next up is Belgium — the same nation that knocked the US out in the Round of 16 back in 2014. Revenge is on the menu in Seattle.
America is dreaming again. Don’t wake them up.
