The Difficult Beginning (July-November 2025)
When Ferguson joined Roma on loan from Brighton in the summer of 2025, expectations were high. However, his first few months proved challenging, managing just one goal in his first 14 appearances across all competitions.
FootItalia stated that Manager Gasperini was publicly critical, stating Ferguson had received “many chances” but needed to improve “not just on a technical level but in terms of attitude.”
Roma were even exploring options to terminate Ferguson’s loan early in January, looking at replacements, including Manchester United’s Joshua Zirkzee.
The Breakthrough (Late November-December 2025)

The turning point came on November 23, when Ferguson came off the bench to put an end to his nearly 13-month club goal drought, scoring in a 3-1 win at Cremonese that sent Roma to the top of the Serie A standings.
On December 11, Ferguson also delivered a fantastic performance, scoring twice in a 3-0 Europa League victory over Celtic at Parkhead.
His goals showcased his technical skills and quality, which he was known for at Brighton, and were gradually re-awakening.
Gasperini expressed words of encouragement and acknowledgement for the young striker during his post-match interview.
Recent Form (Late December 2025)

Most recently, on December 29th, Ferguson delivered a man-of-the-match performance against Genoa, scoring one goal and providing one assist as Roma won 3-1 to ascend into the Champions League spots in the Serie A standings.
Ferguson set up Manu Kone for Roma’s second goal before showing real determination to follow up a saved shot before scoring the third from close range.
The Gasperini Effect
Ferguson has credited Gasperini’s demanding approach for pushing him forward, stating, “Every day he always tries to push me and everyone else to the max. He expects a lot from me, and he demands a lot of intensity; that’s why we work hard.
While Gasperini’s public criticism was harsh and controversial, the manager has more recently praised Ferguson’s progress while maintaining that “Roma must be a top team” with historically great strikers, emphasizing the high standards expected.
Ferguson’s story at Roma shows a gradual awakening from difficulties rather than a complete turnaround. His recent performances suggest growing confidence and adaptation to Serie A football.
Whether this resurrection becomes a full revival remains to be seen as the dramatic season continues.
