Liverpool’s record £116m signing from Bayer Leverkusen, Florian Wirtz made a decisive impact for the English side in their vital 5-1 Champions League victory over Eintracht Frankfurt. The 22-year old who was yet to record a goal or assist in 10 appearances this season helped end a four-game losing streak and provided two assists that emphasized his potential for much bigger contributions going forward.

Breakthrough Performance

Wirtz who faced a lot of criticism from fans on social media a day to the Frankfurt game, supplied the passes for goals scored by Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai, with both assists arriving in quick succession after half-time. He had gone through an extended goalless and assist-less run since joining Liverpool in the summer, and finally broke the drought in this game.

He admitted that while the first half saw him struggle for space and give the ball away before the hosts scored, the second half was far stronger.

“I know that I can do much, much more,” he said, underlining how this is only the start of what he hopes to deliver.

This result not only halted Liverpool’s losing streak but also lifted pressure off the team and the player himself. For Wirtz, signed for a hefty fee from Bayer Leverkusen, the expectations were high and critics had grown vocal during his quiet start. By contributing two assists and nearly scoring himself late in the game, he showed signs of being the creative force Liverpool believed they were getting. He now enters the next phase of the season with renewed confidence and a sense of release.

What Next?

Despite the excellent showing, Wirtz emphasized that he is far from satisfied. He wants to contribute goals, not just assists, and to become a consistent match-winner for Liverpool. Meanwhile, manager Arne Slot acknowledged that this performance could be a turning point, but stressed patience remains key in Wirtz’s adaptation to the Premier League. The next challenge lies in maintaining this level, staying fit, and finding the same chemistry with his teammates in domestic and European matches.

In short, Wirtz’s two-assist evening was more than just impressive, it was a statement. He has shown that he can influence games at a high level, and now his ambition is clear: he wants to deliver more regularly, for Liverpool. If this performance marks the start of a trend, then both the club and supporters will feel fortunate to have him firing.
