Man United vs Roma looked like another long night at Old Trafford. Instead, it became one of the great Champions League comebacks of the season, and a lifeline for a manager who badly needed one.
Roma Strike First and Strike Fast

Roma did not come to Manchester to be polite. Matias Soulé scored from an inspired Mora pass, then Donyell Malen converted a penalty after Ayden Heaven handled.

Those goals came in the 11th and 18th minutes. Opta says no visiting team has scored twice earlier at Old Trafford in major European competition. By half-time, Opta’s supercomputer gave United just a 5.4% chance of winning.

The atmosphere turned poisonous, with chanting against the Glazer family.

Nine games without a win. Two goals down. Hope looked dead.
Fernandes Misses, Then Makes No Mistake

Then came the turning point. Gianluca Mancini brought down Cunha, and Devis Vasquez saved Bruno Fernandes’ penalty. But it was retaken for encroachment, and the captain made no mistake the second time. Cristante had entered the area, and Fernandes sent Vasquez the wrong way in the 58th minute. Some nights, football hands you a second chance. Fernandes took it.
Cunha Takes Over
From there, it was one-way traffic. Roma failed to register a single shot after the break. United generated 2.48 expected goals from 10 second-half shots. goalnewsy-today

In the 83rd minute Fernandes whipped the ball into the box, Leonardo Balerdi failed to clear it, and Cunha tapped in the equaliser. Moments later, substitute Shea Lacey unlocked the Roma defence with a clever pass, and Cunha fired past the keeper at the near post. That made it 3-2, and Old Trafford came apart in the best way.

Cunha’s night had one more twist. He was booked for taking his shirt off in the celebration, then picked up a second yellow in stoppage time for a late slide on Balerdi. That is a small price for a big night.
What It Means for Michael Carrick

The win ended a nine-match winless run and lifted United to 17th in the league phase on six points, while Roma stay 19th on four. The result gave the under-pressure Carrick a lifeline. It does not fix everything. It does buy time, and in football, time is oxygen.

The real questions come next. Yahoo’s review argued Lacey deserves more minutes after his cameo. Can United stop conceding early? Can Cunha stay on the pitch long enough to keep this going?

One thing is clear. This team still has fight in it, and on this night belief beat fear.
