NEW: Tolu Arokodare to Ajax: Inside the Nigerian Striker’s Stunning Move to Amsterdam

Just when Wolves supporters thought Tolu Arokodare’s Molineux story was heading toward a quiet exit, Ajax swooped in and turned it into one of the summer’s most talked-about transfers. The towering Super Eagles forward is set to swap the Premier League relegation zone for Eredivisie ambition, and the details of the deal are as eye-catching as the player himself.

How the Ajax Deal Came Together

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano confirmed the agreement on July 27, 2026, using his trademark “Here We Go” call sign that tells fans a deal is effectively done. According to Romano, Arokodare is joining Ajax on a season-long loan, with the Amsterdam giants covering his full salary for the duration of his stay. Tucked into the agreement is a buy option worth 22 million euros, though crucially it is not mandatory, meaning Ajax can walk away and send him back to Wolves if the move does not work out.

Wolves are not leaving empty-handed either. Reports indicate the Midlands club will receive a loan fee, along with performance-related bonuses tied to Ajax qualifying for European competition next season. It is a structure that gives Ajax flexibility while still rewarding Wolves for parting with a player they only signed twelve months ago.

Why Ajax Moved So Fast

The pursuit reportedly came together quickly, with Ajax entering the race late and wrapping up terms within days. New Ajax boss Michel is said to view the 1.97-metre striker as the ideal target man to lead his attack, filling the gap left since Wout Weghorst’s departure. His arrival is also expected to push Kasper Dolberg toward the exit door, with FC Midtjylland among the clubs monitoring the Danish forward’s situation.

Arokodare’s physical profile explains the urgency. Standing close to two meters tall, he offers a genuine aerial threat and a focal point Ajax have been missing. But reducing him to just a target man undersells his game. His time at Genk showed a forward who combines his frame with real technical range and finishing instinct.

The Numbers Behind the Hype

Arokodare’s spell at Genk remains the clearest evidence of his ceiling. Across his time in Belgium, he racked up an impressive scoring record that made him one of the Jupiler Pro League’s most feared forwards, culminating in a standout 2024-25 campaign where he led the league in goals, expected goals, shots, and aerial success. That form earned him his move to Wolves, though his first season in England proved far tougher than anticipated.

Off-field friction reportedly played a role in accelerating his Wolves exit, with training ground tension and a breakdown in his relationship with manager Cesar Peixoto adding pressure to find him a new home. Ajax now inherit a player with something to prove.

What This Means for Nigerian Football Fans

For Super Eagles followers, this is a move worth watching closely. A return to regular football at a club with Ajax’s European pedigree could reignite the goal-scoring form that made Arokodare a household name in Belgium, and a strong season in Amsterdam would only strengthen his case heading into Nigeria’s next major campaign.

The medical and final paperwork are expected to be completed within days, with Arokodare poised to begin a new chapter under the lights of the Johan Cruyff Arena.
