NEW: Joao Cancelo’s Barcelona Return: The Third Act Nobody Saw Coming

Some footballers leave a club and never look back. Joao Cancelo keeps finding his way home. After two separate loan spells wearing the Barcelona shirt, the Portuguese full-back is now on the verge of making it permanent, and the transfer saga behind it has everything: a player refusing to go back to Saudi Arabia, a club structuring creative financing to make it happen, and a deal that has gone from rumour to verbal agreement to, reportedly, just a signature away.

From Loanee to Priority Signing

Cancelo’s second Barcelona loan, arranged in the winter window of the 2025-26 season, turned into one of the feel-good stories of Hansi Flick’s squad. He impressed enough that retaining him permanently became one of Barcelona’s top three priorities heading into this summer. That is not a small statement from a club known for chasing marquee attacking talent. It reflects just how much trust Cancelo rebuilt in a short amount of time, and how badly he wanted to stay.

Why Cancelo Wants Out of Al-Hilal for Good

The emotional core of this story is Cancelo’s very public falling out with Al-Hilal. He has been blunt about feeling misled by the Saudi club, saying he was promised registration on the Saudi league list that never materialised. His relationship with Al-Hilal manager Simone Inzaghi has reportedly deteriorated further, and Cancelo has made it clear in his own words that he has no intention of returning, regardless of the one year still remaining on his contract. When Al-Hilal summoned him back for pre-season after his World Cup exit with Portugal, Cancelo simply refused to go, choosing instead to wait out the process from his summer break while Barcelona worked the phones.

Inside the Numbers

Money talks in transfer sagas, and this one has moved fast once the figures came into focus. Al-Hilal initially wanted around fifteen million euros to let him go, but that valuation has reportedly softened through consistent dialogue between the clubs, helped along by super-agent Jorge Mendes. The latest reporting points to a fee close to ten million euros including bonuses, with Barcelona and Al-Hilal understood to have reached a verbal agreement on those terms. The most recent updates go even further, describing the transfer as effectively done in principle, with Cancelo set to sign a new two-year contract at Camp Nou and only administrative tax details standing between this saga and an official announcement.

What Cancelo Brings Back to Camp Nou

This is not simply a sentimental reunion. Cancelo’s versatility across both full-back positions, his composure in possession, and his experience at the highest level of the game make him a genuinely useful squad option for Flick, not just a nostalgic one. At 32, he is not chasing a farewell tour. He is chasing regular football at a club competing for major trophies, and Barcelona are chasing a reliable, battle-tested defender at a fraction of market value.

The Final Stretch

Barring a late twist, which this transfer window has not been shy about producing, Joao Cancelo’s third spell at Barcelona looks like a formality rather than a possibility. For a player who has now represented Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Al-Hilal and Barcelona in the space of a few dramatic years, coming home for good would be the most fitting chapter yet.
