NEW: Harry Kane Leads the 2026 Ballon d’Or Race — But Messi and Yamal Are Coming for Him

For years, Harry Kane was football’s great nearly-man. No Premier League title. No Champions League. No major trophy with England. Just goals — mountains of them — and a reputation as the best striker never to lift silverware. That story is officially dead. Kane has emerged as the new favourite for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, and after the World Cup dust has settled, it is his name sitting at the top of the betting markets and power rankings, just ahead of two of the biggest storylines in the sport’s history: a rampaging teenager and a 39-year-old who refuses to leave the stage.

Why Harry Kane Is the Man to Beat

Kane’s case for the Ballon d’Or is not built on a hot two months at a World Cup. It is built on a season most strikers dream about and never get. He scored 61 goals in 51 games for Bayern Munich, powering the club to a domestic double while claiming a third straight Bundesliga Golden Boot with 36 league goals, including a hat-trick in the DFB-Pokal final win over Stuttgart. Add England’s run to the World Cup semi-finals, where Kane became England’s all-time World Cup top scorer along the way, and you have arguably the most statistically dominant season of his career.

There is history at stake too. No Englishman has won the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001, back when the award was still restricted to European-based players. Kane finishing the job would not just be a personal triumph — it would end a 25-year national drought and finally deliver the trophy that has eluded him at every previous stop of his career.

The Chasers: Yamal’s Superstardom and Messi’s Impossible Comeback

Kane’s lead is not comfortable. Lamine Yamal, still a teenager, was central to Spain’s World Cup triumph, terrorising defenders with his dribbling and composure in the biggest moments football has to offer. If Yamal wins, he would become the youngest Ballon d’Or winner in the award’s history — a narrative Ballon d’Or voters rarely resist.

Then there is Lionel Messi. He opened the World Cup at 50/1 to win the award, a total afterthought in the conversation. Then he inspired Argentina to a second consecutive World Cup final, dragging a squad short on obvious talent all the way to the biggest stage in the sport. Spain denied him the trophy, but Messi’s performances have single-handedly reopened a debate almost everyone assumed was closed for good.

Why This Race Feels Different

Since Ousmane Dembélé and Rodri broke the Messi-Ronaldo duopoly over the last two years, the Ballon d’Or has become genuinely unpredictable, and 2026 might be the most wide-open edition yet. Kane leads, but Rodri’s Golden Ball-winning World Cup and Mbappé’s second Golden Boot both keep the field crowded. Voting weighs domestic form, European performances, and now a World Cup summer — and Kane is the only frontrunner who can point to elite numbers across all three columns.

The ceremony lands later this year, but the storylines are already set: an English icon chasing history, a Spanish teenager rewriting the record books, and an Argentine legend refusing to go quietly. Whoever wins, this is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about Ballon d’Or races in a generation.
