NEW: Mbappe Wins the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot: Why This Result Just Reopened the GOAT Debate

Kylian Mbappe did not need the World Cup trophy to make history on Sunday. He already had it wrapped up a day earlier, and it might be the more important prize.

Kylian Mbappe finished the 2026 World Cup as top scorer with 10 goals, two clear of Lionel Messi’s eight, sealing the Golden Boot after Messi was held scoreless in Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time loss to Spain in the final. It is Mbappe’s second Golden Boot in a row, following his eight-goal haul at Qatar 2022, and it has set off exactly the kind of “greatest World Cup scorer ever” debate that football fans live for.

How Mbappe Sealed It

Mbappe was not the outright leader for most of the tournament. Messi actually held the Golden Boot race through large stretches of the group and knockout stages, including a dramatic late equalizer against Egypt that helped Argentina complete a comeback into the quarterfinals. But everything changed in the third-place playoff against England.

With France trailing 4-0 at halftime in what looked like a humiliating exit, Mbappe scored twice in a wild 6-4 defeat, pushing his tally to 10 goals and putting him two clear of Messi heading into the final. Messi never got the chance to respond. Argentina’s forwards were smothered by Spain’s suffocating defense, and Messi finished the final without a shot that troubled Unai Simon or the Spanish goal.

The Numbers That Matter Even More

Here is the stat that will outlive this tournament: Mbappe is now the all-time leading scorer in men’s World Cup history, with 22 goals across three tournaments (2018, 2022, 2026). He passed Messi’s mark and overtook Germany’s Miroslav Klose, who had held the record at 16 goals since 2014, along the way. Messi finishes his World Cup career on 21.

Mbappe also becomes the first player ever to win the World Cup Golden Boot in back-to-back tournaments, a feat that eluded legends like Ronaldo, Pele, and Messi himself.

Why This Is Splitting Football Twitter

The comparisons write themselves, and fans are not holding back. Messi supporters point out he still has two World Cup titles to Mbappe’s one, plus a Golden Ball for player of the tournament in 2022. Mbappe’s camp counters with the sheer weight of the scoring record: 22 goals is not a small margin, and doing it across three different tournaments, at three different ages, against elite defenses, is its own kind of dominance.

There is also the France angle. Mbappe has now scored in a World Cup final for two straight tournaments (2018 and 2022) and delivered again on the biggest stages in 2026, even in a losing cause against England in the third-place game. For a player who is still only in his late twenties, the idea that he could add even more goals in 2030 has fans already recalculating what the ceiling looks like.

The Debate Isn’t Going Anywhere

Golden Boots do not decide who the greatest World Cup player of all time is. Trophies, moments, and rivalries do that. But Mbappe just handed himself an argument that is going to be impossible to ignore for years: he is now the leading scorer in the history of the tournament, with a peak still ahead of him.
