NEW: World Cup Final Preview: Spain vs Argentina — A Battle for Football Immortality

It is the World Cup Final and football fans didn’t dare predict and now can’t stop talking about — the best attack in the tournament against the best defense, a three-time champion chasing history against a nation trying to reclaim the summit it touched only once before.

Argentina Chase a Feat Not Seen Since Brazil in 1962

Lionel Scaloni’s side arrive as defending champions looking to become just the third nation ever to win back-to-back World Cups, joining Brazil (1958, 1962) and Italy (1934, 1938). It has not been a straightforward path. Argentina needed extra time to see off Cape Verde, Egypt, and Switzerland, and a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over England in the semifinal. If there’s a signature trait to this Argentina side, it’s their nerve — the team has scored a tournament-record eight goals after the 85th minute this World Cup, turning must-win moments into their specialty rather than their weakness.

At the center of it all is Lionel Messi, playing his sixth World Cup and already the competition’s all-time leading scorer with 21 career goals and 12 career assists. He arrives at Sunday’s final as the tournament’s top scorer with eight goals this summer alone. A goal on Sunday would make him only the sixth man in history to score in two separate World Cup finals, joining a list that includes Pelé and Zinedine Zidane.

Spain’s Historic Defense Meets Its Toughest Test

Spain, by contrast, have built their run to the final on a defense that has been nearly untouchable. La Roja have conceded just a single goal across the entire tournament and set a World Cup record with six clean sheets — a run that included a commanding 2-0 semifinal victory over a fancied France side. Mikel Oyarzabal has led the line with five goals, while Rodri has quietly controlled midfield, completing more passes than anyone else in the competition. Super substitute Mikel Merino has been the difference-maker late in games, scoring winners in back-to-back knockout matches against Portugal and Belgium.

Then there’s Lamine Yamal. At 19, he carries the weight of being Spain’s brightest attacking hope and the heir apparent to the very man he’s facing across the pitch. It’s been a quieter tournament than expected for the teenager, with just one goal and no direct goal involvement in the knockout stage so far — which only raises the stakes on what could be his signature moment.

What’s at Stake

For Spain, victory would mean a second World Cup title following their breakthrough in 2010, and the rare distinction of holding both the men’s and women’s World Cup simultaneously. For Argentina, it’s a chance to cement Messi’s legacy beyond debate and etch Scaloni’s side into the history books alongside football’s greatest dynasties.

Oddsmakers have installed Spain as favorites heading into kickoff, but this Argentina team has made a habit of rewriting the script when it matters most. Whichever way it breaks, football’s biggest stage — the first-ever 48-team World Cup — is about to crown its champion in front of a global audience expecting fireworks.
