Forget “closing in.” Sandro Tonali is already a Tottenham player, and the story behind how Spurs pulled off one of the most eye-catching deals of the summer is even better than the transfer fee suggests.

The Italy international has completed a club-record move from Newcastle United, and the man who made it happen was not an agent or a director of football. It was his new head coach, Roberto De Zerbi.
The Numbers Behind the Deal

Tottenham are paying Newcastle £92.5 million plus a further £7.5 million in achievable add-ons, taking the total package to around £100 million. That makes Tonali the second-highest fee Newcastle have ever received for a player, behind only the £125 million Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak. For Spurs, it smashes their previous transfer record and arrives just days after they broke it once already, with an £85 million move for Mateus Fernandes from West Ham. Combined, that is £237 million spent in a single window, comfortably surpassing the £225 million Tottenham committed back in the summer of 2023.
This is not incremental spending. This is a statement of intent from a club rebuilding around its new manager.
Why De Zerbi Was the Deciding Factor

Here is where the story gets interesting. Tonali had interest from elsewhere, including Manchester City, yet he chose Tottenham specifically because of De Zerbi. Speaking to Sky in Italy as he flew to London for his medical, Tonali admitted his fellow Italian played a huge role in the decision, though he was careful not to hand him all the credit.

There was also a personal dimension to the move. Tonali and his family had spent three years in Newcastle, but the birth of their son changed their outlook, prompting a fresh start away from the northeast. Combine the football pull of working under De Zerbi with a lifestyle reset, and the pieces fell into place quickly.

Tonali later told Tottenham’s official website that speaking with the head coach for nearly two hours convinced him instantly, describing the conversation as feeling like magic once De Zerbi laid out his vision for the club.
What This Means for De Zerbi’s Rebuild

De Zerbi arrived at Tottenham during a genuine relegation scare, and since taking charge he has moved fast to reshape the squad in his own image.

First it was the defence and midfield getting reinforced, with Fernandes and now Tonali arriving to add control and craft in the middle of the park. According to reports, De Zerbi is not finished yet, with the forward line still expected to receive fresh investment before the window closes.

Adding a ball-playing, tempo-setting midfielder like Tonali fits everything De Zerbi wants stylistically. His teams thrive on possession and rhythm from deep, and Tonali’s passing range and composure under pressure make him close to a perfect match for that system.
The Bigger Picture

Tottenham fans have plenty of reasons to be encouraged here. A club-record fee, a manager clearly trusted enough to convince top talent to turn down bigger suitors, and a rebuild that already looks more coherent than anything Spurs have produced in recent windows. If De Zerbi’s forward-line business lands with the same authority, this transfer summer could end up defining Tottenham’s entire season.
