Messi, Mbappé, or Bellingham? The World Cup’s Best Player Debate Just Got Messy

Transfermarkt threw open the doors on their World Cup Player of the Tournament vote, and the ballot reads like a greatest-hits reel: Lionel Messi. Kylian Mbappé. Jude Bellingham. Three of the most electric footballers on the planet, all with a legitimate case, all with the internet furiously split down the middle.

But here’s the twist — as of this week, this race has completely flipped on its head.

Mbappé’s Odds Just Cratered

Going into the semifinals, Mbappé was the clear favorite for the sport’s biggest individual honor, sitting at +200 on some boards and as low as 8/5 on others. Eight goals, three assists, a Champions League Golden Boot on his club résumé, and a France side many had pegged as the best in the tournament. The numbers said Mbappé. The vibes said Mbappé.

Then Spain happened.

France went down 2-0 in the semifinal, Mbappé finished the game with zero shots on target, picked up a yellow card for a needless clash with Unai Simon, and watched his own free kick sail over the bar in the dying minutes. The market reaction was brutal — his Golden Ball odds cratered from +140 all the way out to +1600 practically overnight. That’s how fast a World Cup narrative can collapse.

Messi Smells Blood

Enter Lionel Messi, who — let’s be honest — never really left the conversation. At 39, in what’s almost certainly his final World Cup, Messi has been scoring for fun: a hat-trick against Algeria (a World Cup first for him), two more against Austria to set an all-time tournament goal record, and a trademark free kick off the bench versus Jordan. He’s up to 21 career World Cup goals, the most in history, and now — with Mbappé’s stock crashing — the betting markets have swung back in his favor as the new favorite.

There’s also the sentimental case nobody can ignore: two-time Golden Ball winner, chasing an almost mythical back-to-back World Cup title, playing (fittingly) for a US-based club in Inter Miami during a tournament hosted partly in America. If there was ever a year for voters to lean into the story, this is it.

Bellingham, the Wildcard Nobody Saw Coming

Then there’s Jude Bellingham, who opened the tournament as a 10/1 afterthought and has since detonated his way into serious contention. Back-to-back braces — first dismantling Mexico in the Round of 16, then dragging England past Norway in extra time in the quarterfinal — have made him the form player left in the competition. Bettors have noticed too: reports had Bellingham pulling in over half of all Golden Ball wagers at one point, more than every other contender combined.

His path is brutally simple. Beat Messi’s Argentina today in Atlanta, get England into Sunday’s final, and Bellingham walks into the conversation not as a wildcard, but as the story of the tournament.

The Verdict? There Isn’t One Yet

That’s what makes this so fun — nobody actually knows how it ends. Messi needs Argentina to win. Bellingham needs England to win. And Mbappé, for all his struggles Tuesday, is still mathematically alive simply by having reached the semifinal.

One thing’s certain: whoever lifts that individual honor on July 19 will have earned every bit of the argument that’s raging online right now.

Cast your vote. The debate isn’t close to over.
