Forget the group stage drama. Forget the penalty shootouts and the giant killings and the shock results that had you screaming at your screen. All of that — every single jaw-dropping moment of the past three weeks — was just the opening act. Because right now, on the Fourth of July, the 2026 FIFA World Cup has entered a completely different universe.
The Round of 16 is officially here. And it is absolutely loaded.
The Round of 32 wrapped up a roller-coaster week of knockout drama across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, and the field has been cut in half. What started as 48 nations chasing glory has now been whittled down to just 16 hungry, desperate teams — and every single one of them knows that one bad night, one mistake, one missed penalty sends them home. There is no second chance. There is no safety net. Win or go home, baby.

The bracket is fixed from this point forward. No reseeds, no redraws. Every team already knows the exact path they must win through to reach the final at MetLife Stadium on July 19. The road is clear. The stakes are enormous. And the matchups? Oh, the matchups are absolutely mouth-watering.

It all kicks off right on America’s Independence Day. First up is Canada vs. Morocco at NRG Stadium in Houston at 1 pm ET — Morocco advancing after defeating the Netherlands on penalties in the Round of 32, reaching the Round of 16 for the second time in as many World Cups. Then at 5 pm ET, Paraguay — yes, Paraguay, the team that sent Germany packing on penalties — walks into Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia to face France. That tie alone should be worth the price of admission.

Sunday brings two more blockbusters. Brazil and Norway do battle at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey at 4 pm ET, setting up an epic showdown between Norway’s talismanic goalscorer Erling Haaland and the dynamic Vinícius Júnior. Then at 8 pm ET, England travel to the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City — one of the most iconic stadiums on the planet — to face the hosts in what promises to be an absolute cauldron of noise and passion. Good luck, Three Lions.

Monday gives us the Iberian Derby everyone has been dreaming about. Portugal vs. Spain at AT&T Stadium in Dallas at 3 pm ET — Cristiano Ronaldo against Lamine Yamal, experience versus youth, pride versus pride. Then at 8 pm ET in Seattle, the USMNT take on Belgium, with the three host nations still alive and the Americans desperate to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002.

Brazil, France, Mexico, England, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, and the USA all advanced from the Round of 32 without needing extra time, while Colombia rounded out the bracket with their win over Ghana. Meanwhile, Argentina survived an absolute heart attack against Cape Verde and will face Mohamed Salah’s Egypt on Tuesday. Switzerland take on Colombia in Vancouver to close out the Round of 16 fixtures.

The three host nations are still in the mix, along with favourites France, Spain, Argentina, England, and Brazil. But Paraguay and Morocco are still standing. Norway are still swinging. Egypt have just made World Cup history. Nothing — absolutely nothing — is guaranteed. NBC Sports
Eight teams are about to be eliminated. Eight teams are about to have their hearts broken. And somewhere in this chaos, a World Cup finalist is taking shape.
